question to EBAY Sellers
How do you as a seller handle the question, "what's the best you can do?" on an item that has Best Offer on there. When I first started on EBAY I would always reply with a nice but short, throw me an offer and we will go from there, only to never hear back from most people. So, I just started to kind of ignore those messages. My friend said he always throws that message out to sellers that he wants to buy from, so I know that it is a tactic to start a conversation. I'm just curious how people on here respond to those questions.
Thanks |
So many ways to respond….
Please submit a best offer if you are interested If they push back, i remind them that messages are non-binding |
.99 no reserve I never will get BIN unless you like messing around talking to guys back and forth with constant counters.
|
Your friend is the worst
|
Ignore and if they persist, block. I’m a high volume seller and those aren’t the customers I’m after.
|
I don't bid against myself, my asking price is listed, or YOUR best offer will be considered.
Care to share your friends eBay ID? |
As you've noticed, most people don't bother to respond if you don't put out a number first.
I now ignore these requests. I also added verbiage in my listings that I do not respond to those types of inquiries. Although, I doubt many read it. I don't even sell much, but knowing I'm not going to respond to these messages is one less annoying thing with which I concern myself. |
I've given my price. Now it's your turn to give yours. That's why there's a Best Offer tab. Use it.
I ignore most of those request. I just delete their message and move on. I bet your friend as been blocked by several sellers. |
I list mostly BIN OBO and those are the buyers I ignore unless it's for a card over $1k. (and even then it's still annoying, at least throw out a number)
I used to answer all of them the same "make me an offer" and most never bother so I stopped wasting my time answering them. To the buyers out there: Just send an offer! You get 5 offers and worst that can happen is getting it declined. |
I block them. In my ~20 years of selling on eBay, I've learned that Buyers who start with a message are typically trouble
|
I always ignore, oddly enough I’ve sold a few items to people who inquired and when I didn’t response they just hit the BIN. But it is never worth your time or headache to answer those people.
|
My instincts are correct. Thanks everyone for the response. Appreciate you all!

Thanks
I have no problem looking at the item I have for sale, the price posted, and what I would be happy with selling it right now. I often will come to a number and offer it up. Thats it. If they ask me to go lower at all, I just say Im firm at X and to let me know. 8) |

Thanks
I always ignore knowing they are looking to simply lowball. Even on listings I have best offer instead of asking just make the darn offer. |
I have never sent a message to a seller negotiating a best offer. I simply submit my best offer through the platform and they either accept it, counter or decline it.
I know that if I sold on ebay I'd be annoyed by people showing me their comp research or asking stupid questions like "what's the best you could do?" so I refrain from such activities. |
I never dignify such daftness with replies
|
Ignore like most have said. My listings have buy it nows all with minimum offer (that I update regularly based on what I see as recent comps/fair market value) before I see an offer. They want to have a discussion because they're unwilling to meet my minimum. If they can't meet the minimum, then there's no point.
|
I personally always respond with something like, "I have the best offer on for this listing so please submit your best offer and we will see if that can work, thanks." It's a copy/paste.
I'm pretty sure if you never respond to messages as a seller the eBay algorithm will ding you, unless you select the box that says "mark question as answered" so that literally takes more work than just the copy/paste. Lastly, if you never hear from them again, that's ok, they weren't likely serious, but I *have* made sales to people who have started out with "what's the best you can do?" so I don't consider blocking or not responding, but that's me. |
I block them. In my ~20 years of selling on eBay, I've learned that Buyers who start with a message are typically trouble
Once I asked for a scan of the back, seller replied they'd get around to it. They never did. This was a raw card listed for $600, so not exactly an unreasonable request. I've learned that sellers who won't respect your communication are typically doing you a favor by blocking you. That said, anyone who starts like the OP mentioned is asking for an unfavorable reply. The best I can do is always the listing price. I got better things to do than undersell myself. |
It's a waste of time to respond, because they don't really want to know your lowest.
No matter what you answer, they are always going to offer 20-30 percent lower. If you have $100 card listed and tell them you'll take a $1 for it, they'll offer 75 cents. |
Ignore them

Thanks
ignore. /end thread |
Imma bit of a turd... But i always respond to "what's the lowest you will go".. With the obvious "what's the most you would pay".... And I'm pretty relentless in my ability to answer stupidity with stupidity.. I also have alot of time and don't believe I have ever sold a card to someone that has led like that.
|
I have always responded and i suddenly realize now i have never had any offers or purchases from these people -
