Joe Montana’s best QB of all time

Dan Marino, who played 17 seasons with the Miami Dolphins, never won a championship, but Montana gives him the nod for "best" quarterback of all time.

Wow! Not only is he the GOAT QB (20th century division) but he's also the most modest and humble QB of all time. Montana just keeps racking up accolades!

Stifle 08-31-2023 07:52 PM

Jennifer Montana I believe stated that Joe Montana was the greatest quarterback of all time. The accolades are pouring in. Didn’t the Priest at the campus of Notre Dame call Joe, Saint Montana, the Best in the Bay ?

asujbl 08-31-2023 08:16 PM

Best passer of all time does not equal the best quarterback of all time

Mutually exclusive

tjforce 08-31-2023 08:21 PM

If you read the article, Montana delineates between "Best" and "Greatest".

"Greatest" refers to career achievements.

"Best" refers to physical talent.

I can absolutely listen to an argument that Dan Marino is one of the all time great physical talents to play QB. And I'd agree that he was a better physical talent than Montana.

Now, Greatest? By this definition, nobody that I know of is saying Marino was the greatest.

corndog 08-31-2023 08:23 PM

Warren Moon is right up there with Marino.

Just like Rodgers (-1 ring)

Forty F'in Niners.

JWBlue 08-31-2023 08:42 PM

No.....

Just someone saying nice things about another person. No mean.

Montana isn't going to say. "I was better than him."

Wake me up when Mahomes passes Aikman first. Right now he's Eli Manning but loses to Brady in Super Bowls.

Terry Bradshaw is the OG.

4 SBs and country music swagger. Two things Mahomes can only dream of.

What years did Aikman and Eli win their NFL MVP Awards? Being a game manager on a stacked team doesn't equate to being a great QB.

Brady couldn't win it all with the most stacked roster of all time and Mahomes failed at least twice with stacked rosters.

This isn't the argument that you think it is.

Yeah but Mahomes had a terrible Oline and Chris Jones jumped offside.

So his SBWar is still 4.

majestik101 09-01-2023 12:07 PM

Maybe Joe meant that Marino is the most athletic he's ever seen when he said "best". Marino isn't even in the top 15 of "best" quarterbacks of all time. I don't know what ol' Joe was smoking when he invoked Marino's name in between sips of room temperature Guiness.

Brandon75 09-01-2023 12:13 PM

I will take Montana's word. One of the greatest qb's in history said Marino is one of the best. I would tend to believe someone that actually played in the nfl at the highest level more than people who havent.

SBWar would be the ultimate pumper stat.

I can't patent it.

It's the mental juju Mahomies sprinkle on every situation in which the expected outcome of a Mahomes play, game or season is not realized.

He's never thrown an int, lost a game or not won the SB (when adjusted for hypeflation)

How many SBWars are we allowed to credit QBs with each season?

Did Hurts, Allen, and Burrow each earn 1 SBWar last season?

Did Mahomes earn a SBWar of 2 for his dominant 2018 season?

packman80 09-01-2023 12:54 PM

Marino and Rodgers maybe the two most talented QB's to ever play the game. But both have way underperformed in the post-season with only 1 ring between them. But both will be thought of as top 5-10 QB's all time. You don't need to have a bunch of rings to be great. Look at Bradshaw he has a bunch of rings but no one will ever say he's a top 10 QB.

TheFrenzy 09-01-2023 01:02 PM

The sheer willful amnesia by people pretending that Brady wasn't slapped with the "game manager" rap for the first half of his career is astounding.

Burrow had a -1 SBWar for his SB loss, despite having a completely decimated Oline.

Mahomes had a +2 SBWar for his SB loss because he had a completely decimated Oline.

Allen has a -3 SBWar because he lost to Mahomes in the AFCC game when he didn't get the ball in OT

Mahomes has a +2 SBWar because he did not get the ball in OT of the AFCC game

The formula becomes apparent the more you listen to the arguments.

The one that always gets me is when people try to compare Mahomes last 5 years with Brady's first 5 years (as a starter) and try to say that Brady was better. Mahomes was absolutely better over those stretches.

Now, compare with Brady's run from 2014-2018 when he won 3 Super Bowls, 2 Super Bowl MVPs, 1 MVP, 2 MVP runner ups, you have a much better argument.

Brady from 2014-18 was better than Brady 2001-2005, and that shouldn't be at all controversial.
