Which Juan Soto Topps Rookie is the best?
Hello, I was wondering which topps rookie of Juan Soto is generally regarded as the better version, is it the topps update US300 or the topps chrome update HMT55? I know bowman 1st is the true rookie but those are quite pricey (I want an auto version) so I’m now relegated to finding the best topps rookie card. Thanks!

My understanding is that both of these are his rookies, am I wrong? Found another thread where someone said the chrome version is slightly more valuable but I can’t find a ton of info. The chrome update is the exact same picture as the regular topps update FWIW and they both have RC on them. |

There are a lot of 2018 Juan Soto cards with the RC logo. Desirability varies by product, as well as card "type" -- so, for example, in addition to the cards you cited he also has a less desirable 2018 "rookie debut" card (thought the photo is pretty good). I recommend you spend some time researching on ebay to see what's out there before committing to anything. |

If you want an autographed version just type “Juan Soto rookie auto” into eBay and find one you like with the RC logo on it that you’re comfortable paying for. I’m sure some people will say the Topps Chrome Update auto but it’s a sticker auto which myself and many others find fugly. I personally like his Topps Five Star rookie auto. Topps Dynasty is awesome but is probably out of your price range and it doesn’t even look like many are on the market. |

Thank you. I’ve been searching eBay and since everybody lists prices to varying degrees it’s tough for me to make out what’s the best. Essentially in my price range I can find graded autos (9.5 Beckett or 10PSA)of the US300, HMT55, 2017 Bowman Chrome Draft, or the 2018 Bowman’s best rookie. I just want to get the best bang for my buck, do you think the bowman’s are better than the topps chrome? |
Sotos 2016 Bowman 1st auto is a prospect card. It’s not considered a rookie card, but it’s generally a players first Auto card. They are desirable and hold value pretty well. You cannot go wrong with buying one of these, however the price will probably be higher than your budget. If you can buy one, acquire it and don’t think twice about it.
Now any card from 2018 with the RC logo is considered to be a rookie. What’s the best one? Everyone is different. I take into account popularity and image design when buying. I want something that will hold value, that others are collecting, and I want the image to pop. If I gotta look at it, I want to like it. This is my list below. Autos in order of the best: keep in mind that this is my opinion. Others will be different. At the end of the day, it’s going to come down to what you can afford and what you like. -HMT55 refractor Autos. It’s the original Soto image and is recognizable everywhere. They come in colors and parallels and are shiny. I wished I scooped one up early on. I love the image. These will most definitely be out of your price range. -Topps Dynasty. Sexy and awesome. Out of your price range. Bowmans Best. Great set and the auto is on card as opposed to a sticker. Sticker autos suck. Don’t ask me why, it’s just the standard consensus of the hobby community. In my opinion, if I had $800 to spend on a Soto auto, this is what I would grab. You can try and snag a PSA 10 or BGS 9.5 very close to the $800. These come in parallels such as red, gold, green etc but the base auto will be in price range. Triple threads. I like the set. I have the Gold parallel and the card looks gorgeous in hand. The auto is on card and it just looks very clean. This is a hit or miss with most people. Some people love TT, others not so much. You should be able to snag a base auto within your price range. Five Star- this is almost identical to Triple Threads as being a hit or miss with the hobby community. These come in parallels but the base should be in budget. Finally, everything that’s an insert Auto. Cards like the salute or the 1983 just don’t do it for me. I’m gonna toss in the ugly looking Topps gallery auto in this section too. Stay away from these unless you can scoop them up really cheap. Edit to add that I’ve missed some autos, but these are the ones that come to mind. Also, make sure you are buying a Topps Certified Auto. Don’t make the mistake of scooping up an in person auto. |
