Does playoff success matter?
 

Title says it all. Does playoff success matter for how a player will be remembered in the hobby or is the overall career enough? So let’s say a player had a great career but virtually no playoff success/experience, does that affect how he is remembered in the hobby?

Not for Mariners fans, no.

Bumgarner might be a good example. I think people care more about his cards because of his postseason success.

Because he’s the greatest WS pitcher ever. When it matters, he shows up.

Baseball History absolutely but Hobby wise as far as prices go not so much because in today's hobby those achievements are already baked in. One might see a short term (1-2) month bump but that's it. JMO

Yes, some great players will be remembered as playoff winners and some will be remembered as playoff losers or absentees.

Some would have been even more popular had they won.

Oh and Ted Williams and Ernie Banks! Those guys had incredible post seasons!

It’s almost as though baseball isn’t a team game with 25-30 players and a single great player can win games all by himself!

In my opinion Ted Williams ends this discussion.

There are very very few people that know how many titles Babe Ruth or Mantle has. "Rings" just wasn't a thing until Michael Jordan.

In today’s era of the hobby, I think it does. We have too many low intelligence investorbois who can’t comprehend why one baseball player can’t propel his team to a championship all on his own.

Playoff success helps more than playoff failure hurts.

In terms of hobby value, absolutely. Some big time collectors of players like Fernando Valenzuela, Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser, Will Clark, Tim Lincecum, Pablo Sandoval and Mad Bum. Hall of Very Good players and doubtful any of them are getting into the HOF. But they pull HOF prices or more. Yes, they were all on Dodgers and Giants championship teams.

Edited to add: Also seen a lot of movement on Jose Canseco. 40-40, MVP, Champion and then all that other stuff. :)

You mean to tell me there are collectors that don’t collect based on some bias voting by writers who don’t actually watch the players? My god, the humanity!

I think playoff heroics can prop up someone who would have little hobby love otherwise, but its not a requirement for hobby love

Judge has captured the heart of a young generation of fans and more. The man is literally larger than life and is a a legit Triple Crown threat, playoffs and age be damned. His legacy is strong and people collect him because of that. He is a Yankee and the standard is high, so we shall see if be can build on that. Long term he'll be alright, similar to Don Mattingly, another player whose collecting base didn't see playoff success.

Basketball is very very different and one great player makes a difference. Notably certain teams with just one great player have won championships. Bill Walton with Portland and Hakeem Olajuwon with Houston most notably come to mind.

Of course basket ball teams have only 12 players, usually only 7 or 8 that play almost all of the minutes.

That’s how I feel about it. If Mattingly had started his career at a different time for the hobby, he would be even more collected than he is today.

Also, the star player can have the ball all the time. High usage guys like Jordan, Kobe, LeBron can carry the load for an entire team. Baseball, you only get 4-5 at bats.

Of course post season matters, that is when legacy and memories are made. There are players which are still great because they are HOFers and didn't do much in the playoffs. Doing well in the playoffs ups your profile a ton.
