Comment from 20 years ago Re: 2004 Bowman Draft
On the 20 year anniversary of the 2004 BDPP release I thought this post from the PSA forum was interesting:
“This is a great modern product to collect. The 2002 and 2003 have gone way up from their original cost = $55! There is a rumor that most of the 2004 Bowman Chrome DP are chipped and off center. I am not going to open the factory sealed box I own for this reason. It is worth more sealed.” |
LOVE IT!

A poster replied:
“However, you're probably right about the box being worth more sealed. Chances of getting $56+ worth of cards out of it are kind of low. I doubt the box will increase in value like the 2002 set did, though. They printed a lot more of it, just as they did in 2003 (which is still at or below the original price). That you can still get a box for the same price 2 months after release shows there's plenty to go around for the time being. But in a year or two it could be worth having.” |
Looking back 20 years, that draft class didn’t age well. I sunk way too much money into Danny Putnam

Gotta rip your boxes before the Aflac redemptions expire, though.

I bet there were also people complaining about the cost of wax back then too.

Wax was fantastic back then. I think I opened several cases of 2004, ten cases of 2005 and probably over twenty cases of 2006. Good times. |

But millennials were too young to complain about cards back then. I think most people just wondered why folks were interested of buying cards of players who were still in the minor leagues, not prices. Many products could be found at a discount shortly after release. |

$55 in 2003 is equivalent to $94 today. Makes sense we are paying $1000 for Bowman Draft.

I was buying clearance 2018 Update at Wal-Mart. I even left blasters and fat packs behind. |
I think the main complaints back then were price and quality control. The auto checklist was maybe 20 players deep. Hobby cases were less than $600, lol. I was focused more on Team USA back then and they were $350 for 20 set cases.

2003 was so fun. It was loaded with: Delmon Young, Rickie Weeks, Billingsley, Ryan Harvey and lots of other studs (at the time). It was easy to make money opening draft back in the day. Fun times!!

Millennials are the only ones to ever complain, you know
