Collector Sells Off Entire Collection for McDavid High Gloss Young Guns
https://youtu.be/cZfKWU5fako?si=gNp5McxGVonjSPzH
Curious if anyone has been following this. EditionSportsCards on Instagram and YouTube and has essentially sold his entire collection to fund a single card: Connor McDavid Young Guns High Gloss /10 BGS 9. His collection has been auctioned off over the past month via Slab Sharks and featured some high-end McDavid, Pavel Bure, and Elias Pettersson. He claims to only have 4 cards left in his collection, all being Connor McDavid cards. Thoughts on this? Would you sell your entire collection to fund one card? |

That single McDavid card is better than my whole collection combined, whether measured by actual resale value or objectively/intrinsically. |
Not a bad idea beyond the fact selling a bunch of high-end of the same players leads to lower sales as the same people are competing and even a super collector can't afford to go all in on a bunch of cards at once.

I think the market more than handled whatever McDavid / Pettersson Adam ended up selling. He even made a good profit on his Pettersson Golden Treasures rookie, which I thought for sure would have suffered given the abysmal year he's had. |

I thought he was selling more of each player honestly, although some cards did end under expectations especially some Mcdavids, although he blamed them ending during Four Nations final in one of the follow-up vids I watched. He did well though the cards really add up when you have some big ones mixed with a bunch of $500 plus |
Buddy understands the ebbs and flows of the hobby and no doubt in my mind figured the HG is going to be worth more than his full PC of great but not grail cards.
Good for him, wish I could do the same tbh. |

My biggest McDavid concern is the increasing chance that he never gets a cup and how the hobby will view that. Great card though and I’m sure he’s happy with it, which is all that matters. Stoked for him. Writing is on the wall for Pettersson values and he did GREAT to get out when he did. As a Canucks fan it pains me to say this. |
Not on the same scale, but I started moving away a lot of my lower-end traders. I want to buy a Roy OPC rookie, probably a PSA8 or something similar with what I get from my sales.

I mean I understand it.
Mcdavid is already considered the best player of this generation. Even if he retired today he'd be an all time legend. I mean he won the stanley cup mvp while his team lost. |
It's what most people on epack try to do every day so yeah it makes sense that someone with a nice collection decides to go all-in on one very big card. Half of the cards that funded it were nice McDavids, so it's not like he's betting on someone else. There aren't many cards in hockey that are better than McDavid's High Gloss Young Guns.
A more interesting story would have been someone selling off a nice collection of McDavids and Crosbys for the Bedard Gold Outburst or a 1/1 Shield Auto. But I'm just a schmuck on the sideline spitballing. |
Brilliant. My goal is to sell everything I have when I turn 55 to use as a slingshot to retirement. If I can consolidate what I have now into a handful of cards (or just ONE card) between now and then, I would make that move. This dude just landed the ultimate McDavid RC AND still managed to hold onto the cornerstone of his PC.

what was the cornerstone?
and yea it is everybodys goal to move 100k cards into 10 lol |
As the saying goes, you can't take it with you. Would jump at the chance to downsize dramatically if there was a steep card I ultimately desired
|
Been strongly considering doing this with Shohei Ohtani.

This happens a lot in Magic the Gathering. People buy cards to build decks to play, but then when they stop they often sell off everything and aim to buy one of the Power 9, or another cornerstone investment piece. Almost never do they regret doing so.

I made a poll in OT in homage to this thread:
