Drake Maye: What's the future hold?

I did a search and didn't see a thread on Drake Maye. Wondering thoughts of BO members here on Maye. Mac Jones redux?

asujbl 04-11-2025 02:47 PM

Mac Jones sucked and everyone knew he sucked. This isn’t College. Anyone that spent legit money on him was a crazy person

Maye is good

Being drafted by the same team is irrelevant

I agree. Mac seems like a career backup. You can probably get him to make few mistakes, but he is not dynamic enough to be a long term starting qb. HIs absolute ceiling to me is chad pennington. Maye seems like the potential is there. I prefer qbs that don't come from dominant programs as it is tough to rate the guys that come out of the top schools because they are surrounded by future nfl players.

Soon he'll hold JJ McCarthys jockstrap. If he's lucky.

Love everything about him .. video reminds me of Phillip rivers or Peyton manning

All I have is the eye test. I think he’s going to be a franchise guy without question

Ninotores 04-14-2025 02:36 PM

I like him, but really...what do our opinions matter - wait for slyguy to chime in. He knows everything after all.

I believe this will go the opposite way, but we shall see!
... video reminds me of Phillip rivers or Peyton manning

All I have is the eye test. I think he’s going to be a franchise guy without question
I agree Maye has potential. Real ability.

It's really hard to eval Maye, Caleb, and Rattler when their teams were so horrible last year. They were in many must-pass and quick pressure situations. Caleb might be screwed year after year until he can leave Chicago FA, but Maye and Rattler have significantly easier groupings (and improved coach coming in).

That AFC East division is weird as Buff is very good and figures to stay that way (threat for 1 seed ever year)... but Mia is below average and NYJ are among the worst in the league. So, Pats should have an easy path to 2nd place with any decent roster moves... but a very hard path to ever winning the division when Josh Allen's in their way annually.

Personally, I think Maye will be good, but he's kinda like Bo Nix: limited as he's stuck in a division with a superstar QB. It's just very hard to ever go anywhere serious in playoffs or make SB without at least one home game. Bo Nix is even more rough shape as he has both Chiefs and Chargers in his grouping; he needs to beat both to ever have a home game.

All in all... like Maye as a player, but wouldn't buy his cards due to team/situ. No way. They're too high valued for a young guy Allen's Bills in the same division. NFL is just a very situational game.

It's almost like Maye has the ability to become a superstar QB and be a threat to Buffalo the same way Josh Allen went from looking like an interception machine to a playoff threat every year.

I’m not buying his cards, prices are dumb and it’s a dangerous game but I like what I see from Maye. He really performed well last year despite the circumstances— abysmal offensive line, lackluster receiving core and a pedestrian coaching. He’s playmaker.

Vrabel, McDaniel back as OC, #4 pick, Diggs and the offseason filled plenty of their defensive voids. Playoffs is a possibility.

blackbears86 04-15-2025 03:34 PM

I'm a fan and quietly nibbling on some of his cards when I see a good price.
I'm a fan and quietly nibbling on some of his cards when I see a good price.
Good price? I have seen nothing but ridiculous prices on Caleb, Maye, Nix, and definitely Daniels cards. There is almost no way for them to increase barring a serious playoff/SB run and MVP calibur season. At current prices, even a ProBowl nod and a first round playoff loss would be a bit of a letdown.

Maybe I'm old school, but I don't see how any team will ever win much when they can't win their own division.
Nix, Caleb, Maye, Daniels only have a shot to win their divi if another team (or 2+ other teams for Caleb and Nix divi) has injuries.

...now JJ McCarthy, Penix, Rattler have a shot to win their groups (as do TLaw, Stroud), get a bye, make a run. We'll see. Their prices are still fairly high... all rookies are always overrated, for cards (and usually ffb too).

People do buy boxes and get hits. And those hits come at a good price, thus making all the people you're claiming are too expensive a good sell or hold for pc. Ebay, as much as you guys want it to be the be all end all of the hobby, isn't the only thing out there.

Example. I paid $120 for a Donruss Mega Box. I overpaid but wanted to open just one. As I waited at retail for a while and nothing. One box. $120. I opened it and got a Caleb Williams Downtown. Pretty much any other downtown would have stayed with me, but I'm from Chicago and I cannot stand the Bears. More the ridiculous fans, but the organization is a joke on top of it.

So guess what? I made a good bit of money selling that card. Because again, buying singles for stupid prices on an archaic auction site is not the only way to get good cards.

Second example. I bought one box of Topps Inception. Pre-ordered for $250. I hit a Jayden Daniels RPA Auto. I got a "ridiculously priced" player for a good deal.

Eagles can easily regress next year and the Commanders win division if they take a step forward. Chiefs dominance is about to the end. Reid will retire soon, and the whole team will be transition. Both the Chargers and Broncos will be competitive for the division.

Even if the teams get wild card for playoffs. There has been 5 wild card teams to win the Super Bowl since 2000.

Antman5 04-16-2025 10:25 AM

I think Maye however has the highest short term upside for now. JD prices are mind boggling, similar to CJ Stroud’s rookie year, Caleb still has that former #1 pick hype plus the Ben Johnson addition to help sustain them. Bo Nix is expected to have a better sophomore season. Maye’s prices appear to be lower than those 3.

Questions on Maye’s future has not been addressed fully this offseason and the guy who’s supposed to make his load easier -Diggs- suffered a torn ACL. It remains to be seen if NE can put an average O Line to protect their QB1, so expectations on the Patriots are quite low. But if Vrabel can pull a Harbaugh and lead NE to a wild card spot while McDaniels develops Maye into a 4,600 total yards, 35 total TD, 15 INT with 66% completion rate, Maye will probably have a crazy sellers market window this upcoming season- but obviously that’s the best case scenario for him.

In general, buying sealed sports cards stuff to open it - or worse, buying breaks spots - is setting money on fire. This is common knowledge.
I think the breaks might eventually get regulated (or at least age-verified?) if enough college kids, and even high school kids, max out their parents' credit cards chasing 1/1s and case hits.

Over any significant amount, getting singles via boxes/breaks will be MORE costly than buying singles (and the "hits" you get opening or break spot are hardly ever guys you want).

It's like me saying buying a Corvette is too expensive... but you can just win one on Wheel of Fortune. :D

nothing major, picked up a few rookies at card show Saturday. I'm talking less than $10 bucks a pop.

boxbuster7 04-16-2025 07:46 PM

Maye is 2 years younger than most of the QBs in this class - so I think he may have some growing pains but will have a solid amount of time to be the guy

I have literally proven you wrong with my last post. I have not broke the bank. And boxes have been available for decades, pretty sure they aren't going to put age limits on them. But you'll ignore this and post something else. So take care.
I have literally proven you wrong with my last post....
What a world it'd be if we all tried to do that everywhere we went? Hmm.

Saying you hit a rare card in a box does not mean rare cards are cheap and affordable. (but that's what breaks count on to sell spots, yes)
