Greg “Toe” Nash

I’m sure a lot don’t know who he was but in the eyes of many one of the greatest “what if” ball players.

2001 FOREVER!

Didn't he Wander Franco out of baseball?

Franco had an idea how society worked, Toe did not. I think his ordeal involved a 15 year old as well.

I remember reading this article by Peter Gammons about Nash:

https://www.espn.com/gammons/s/2001/0111/1007850.html

Bought 20 TC RCs after that.

Looking back, he could have been a switching hitting Ohtani.

The article is more about how professionals can destroy a life. All of that was way too sudden. Then you left him with random players to put under their wing? Were they interested in being that type of leader and if not, did Nash suffer because of it? I mean, how many players trying to get to the show are interested in being a babysitter? Also, Hamilton was an addict at the time if I'm not mistaken. Anyhow, that was one heck of a time in the hobby and really an example of the type of talent out here in the USA>

Funny timing for this thread. I was going through some late 90’s early 2000’s boxes over the weekend and found my very large Nash Stash.

I had no idea he died

I still have my 2001 Topps auto...

Wrightfan85 08-21-2025 06:14 PM

Didn't realize he died. Rays have had a lot of prospects with issues that got in the way of their careers.

The irony being that he was illiterate, but signed his name better than 95% of current prospects.

I remember you know. How ironic the crusader who rails against pedophiles and baselessly labels others pedophile sympathizers has cards of a guy who raped a 15 year old.

Hootiefish 08-21-2025 09:26 PM

Princeton, West Virginia, where the Rookie League team of the Rays was located, was the absolute worst place in the world to drop Toe Nash and Josh Hamilton in 2001. Depressed area filled with nothing but drugs and a strip club.

76 bids mostly by the same 2 people. That’s all you need.

SaveMeTheGum 10-08-2025 09:45 AM

For every Ohtani and Judge and Trout, there's a 1000 of these guys. Brandon Wood. Delmon Young. Brett Lawrie. Even the guys that "make it" usually never retire at their prospect values -- David Wright, Ryan Howard, etc. What a blast from the past!
