Dang… Topps is even going hard for the 2nd and 3rd tier licenses. I feel like SpongeBob is one that UD should have tried to nab. Maybe they get Simpsons or South Park.

Yeah, I do agree it does feel like a 2nd tier license... I hope boxes aren't too much for this set though. I personally don't see this set getting as much hype as Disney or Marvel or even GPK. Says september 2nd for the release. |
It's going to do way better than you think. I'd say it'll do better than random GPK releases because there's so much pent up demand, but worse than Disney or Marvel because there's not as big of a real collector base.

You think SpongeBob is on same tier as Disney, Marvel, Star Wars? |
Oh, cool. SpongeBob is EQL. Congratulations, Breakers! The backdoor is open!

Be careful.. it’ll go right to your thighs! |
You think SpongeBob is on same tier as Disney, Marvel, Star Wars?
SpongeBob's up there, it's 29th on Wikipedia's list of highest-grossing media franchises. Disney Princess is 5th, the MCU is 9th, Star Wars is 4th. Star Trek is 32nd, James Bond is 39th. Pokémon is #1, of course. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises |

Pokémon is #1, of course. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises
So I guess it boils down to where you break off tiers. You mention Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars all being top 10 and Sponge Bob being 29 (top 30)… so not a stretch to think someone would slot 29 a lower tier than top 10. At any rate, my point still stands. Fanatics is gobbling everything up. |
Been looking forward to this set. I grew up on Spongebob, a mega fan in my youth. Looking forward to seeing the checklist and ripping a few boxes.
|
no thanks. I can get licensed Kayou Spongebob boxes of 18 packs (5 cards each) for about $25 USD. Giving variety of cards, all foil or acetates.
The value proposition of these are horrible. |
Topps remains king where non-sports are concerned.
The sketches and actual sponge cards from the first two sets have been "hot" cards for years. There are no existing autographs. These will sell like hotcakes. Looking forward to seeing some Spongbob additions to the Animated Series card thread: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1221976 |
Spongebob cards will be in HIGH demand.

If it's anything like the game that I perceive they play, they'll offer 10 boxes at $99-150, it'll sell out in -30 seconds and everyone will scream BOTS at the tops of the lungs then buy it in hobby shops or ebay a month later at 3-5X the initial price. Although breakers on various selling platforms will have Uhauls full of cases to break somehow. Maybe I'm just too cynical in my old age. I love me some Spongebob though, hope I can get some without selling blood again. |

THIS Larry Walker already stated he is buying a pallet of cases of this. |

I think it will be like the recent GPK Green Day drop with more “regulars” getting a shot. It all depends on how much they make available though. As others have speculated, they could limit initial availability to build buzz. |
This is the same age group of adults buying this that had Pokemon cards as kids. Spongebob was on tv while they were playing with their cards. Some of you are going to be really surprised.

I don’t think anybody doesn’t think it will do well. I mean GPK did really well. Topps is killing it lately on the nonsports side. So it won’t be a surprise this does well. |
I sold the PSA 10 2009 Topps SpongeBob sketch card by Tibbit to a guy in the UK for around $6k. I’m confident this release will do quite well. There is worldwide demand for SpongeBob. I’ve visited a ton of different countries and no matter where I go I always see SpongeBob in the native language on TV. He’s bigger than you think worldwide.

2003 Upper Deck Aquatic Amigos Spongebob reminds one of the best buys in the busines. So underrated. With super rares/ultra rares/secret rares.
