Pete Alonso to Orioles
Jeff Passan
@JeffPassan BREAKING: First baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Alonso leaves the Mets to make a loaded AL East even better. As a Mets fan, this sucks. |
Red Sox couldn't beat 5/$155M?!?!?
|
Wow, orioles making up for their disaster season last year!

Mets fans are basically rioting after losing Nimmo, Diaz, and Alonso over the course of just a few weeks. Stearns is dangerously close to costing the team quite a few season ticket sales if he doesn't make some significant signings/trades very soon.

G0d Mother F&(*&(E%(*($%)(*) Dammit!
Great job Breslow... |

30+ mil for a 1st baseman that isn't a great fielder is still rough. Could end up being a win for the Mets if they turn around and use the money next year on Skubal etc. |

I want to be fair. I am actually ok with 2 of the 3 guys leaving. Diaz hurts. The other 2 are ok, as long as there are additions to the team that result in an upgrade. |
How I feel as a Mets fan

Dodgers will get Skubal imho
I want to be fair. I am actually ok with 2 of the 3 guys leaving. Diaz hurts. The other 2 are ok, as long as there are additions to the team that result in an upgrade.
Exactly this. :)! |

Could this possibly come from above Stearns? Cohen has lost a ton of money on the Mets over 5 years...and has two playoff series wins to show for it. Maybe the order is to throttle back spending? |

Red Sox fans are still waiting for them to spend the money they're saving on Devers. |
Joel Sherman reports the Mets never made him an offer, as it became clear to them he was getting bids for more $ and years than was in their "comfort zone".

There was clearly something going on behind the scenes with the Mets. This is also the problem Cohen created by running the team in the red and giving Soto what he did. You create a split in the clubhouse. One guy is the golden child and gets whatever he wants, others get a take or leave it approach, we don't really want you. Everyone in that clubhouse knows Cohen could pay them whatever. The man is almost 70 and worth north of 20B. They all know there doesn't need to be a budget and there wasn't with Soto. |
Good for the O's, and Petey himself too. He gets more hate than he deserves. For all the talk about how he'll age and what the projections say, the dude plays every single day, sleepwalks to 30 homers, and just put up the second best season of his career
Mets, on the other hand - yikes |
I've got a small Alonso collection which I always felt slightly conflicted about as a Braves fan, so I'm pleased to see him out of the East. I've been pleased in general with the Mets' moves this offseason, not that my Braves have done squat worth talking about yet either.
I'm guessing this means the Mets will give Ryan Clifford a shot? There aren't really any other good 1B available. Maybe a really weird trade with the Phillies for Harper? Lindor to Philadelphia for Turner and Harper with some pieces thrown in on either side? That'd be crazy, but all of the clubhouse beefs leaking out of the Mets organization and their odd offseason would make more sense if they are working on a big deal. Regardless, I don't get the Mets at all currently. |
So much for the plan to shift Adley to first.
|
good for Pete Alonso. Nice get for Boras, who clearly is still the best of the best.
|
well looks like Alonsos hobby career is over

Please don't take this as me rubbing salt in the wound, but this scenario was likely to happen. Also, the offseason isn't over yet. There's still guys out there that the Mets should be targeting.
>Cohen buys team >Hypes up the fanbase by continuously saying how committed he is to win a championship. >Follows through by breaking out the "f you" money to the point where MLB has to create another tax bracket. >Proceed to miss the playoffs 3 out of the first 5 seasons... 0 WS appearances >Realizes that throwing money at the problem doesn't always solve it and could create more problems. >Projected salary already at $274m >Time to cut back and get "smart" This was easy to predict because this was practically the Yanks circa 2013-2016. All Cohen had to do was have a convo with Hal and he could've warned him. |

He didn't get to north of 20B by spending money, he did it by breaking sec rules and throwing his underlings under the bus lol. |
Mets fans feeling like fans of a low payroll team is hilarious.

Weren’t Adley and Jackson some of the more sought after rookies in recent years? Cal Ripken Jr.’s sales seem to always have done okay too. |
As a Met fan this is devastating, and as also a heavy collector of Pete's cards and memorabilia I am guessing it is now almost worthless
