“on-relic” autographs
 

If this has been discussed before, would like to read previous comments

But to me this seems like a relatively new thing, though I rarely pay much attention to relics and autos. Until, I pull one from a ‘pack’, in this case a hanger of 25 Update which coughed up a sweet one from Albert Pujols, an auto relic Heavy Lumber insert.

His signature is directly on the little bit of wood from a bat. I can’t recall seeing such a card construction approach before, though maybe it has a long history. ?

I see on the 25 Update checklist there are 88 subjects for Heavy Lumber autos, so plenty of marketplace activity on these I would expect.

So now am interested to hear thoughts on these - are they more desirable due to uniqueness, or just more whatevs in the permanent flood of Baseball Cards? Will ink-on-wood maybe last longer than ink-on-cardboard, or sticker?

I was more worried about the ink seeping into the wood and getting lighter. Here is a card I pulled in 2009, the ink hasn’t changed but it’s been kept out of light.

Upper Deck has done a lot of "on-wood" autos in hockey over the years with its "Stick Signings" subsets....

Most examples from older sets are "manufactured" relics and not actually pieces of game used bat, glove, jersey, etc. like the Trout in the OP.

I see them as less desirable than on cardboard and I feel they will not last as long due to bleeding into the material.

On wood or metal may be the most durable compared to on cloth, on glove, on baseball, etc.

I’d personally stay away for long term holding.

Couple of sets from back in the day. LOVE these cards but they sure are difficult to find now. Sweet Spot set has some impressive bat barrels too.

Upper Deck Sweet Spot probably killed that goose along with on-jersey relic autos. The Sweet Spot baseball cards soaked into the cheap material. The jersey cards were just blurry.

2008 Upper Deck Ultimate Baseball had a lot of on memorabilia auto's. 2001 EX had pieces of the outfield wall with auto's on them. I kind of liked these.

Those mays are pretty the rest meh

Did I send you that Boggs back when we used to do the Birthday thread on these boards? That was a fun thread until my birthday came around in November and I got hosed by whomever was supposed to send me a card. I had a bit better luck on the “floating box” that we shipped from person to person and took/added what we wanted in the box.

I have one of those Upper Deck Sweet Spot cards of Dave Winfield where they put the auto upside down. #ThanksTopps
