The wrong way
 

Ok, got this message from a buyer of a card last night.

"[B]I purchased the above item from you, paid 3.25 for shipping, and then I had to pay 72 more cents for COD. This is rediculous, will you refund my paypal account that money, or do I need to leave you negative feedback?[/B]"

First off, I don't mind refunding someone some money if the shipping was off and something goofy like this happens, but the guy could have gone about it a little better.

Secondly, I'm really not sure how this is even possible. I used the PayPal system to print out the postage and I have a scale sitting on my desk so I know the weight on the package was spot on. I can't see how the post office says I was 72 cents off. Seems pretty weird to me.

refund him the 72 cents, call it a day and BLOCK. and post his ebay name. hahaha.

I'm with you...sure not exactly the way to say sorry. Something along the lines of... I had to front to money to receive my cards, would you please refund me XXX.

$0.72 would be about 4 oz off on a package. Thats a lot for a scale to be off. Was this maybe a case of the STUPID "3/4 in thick rule?"

I had a similar message from a buyer under similar circumstances recently. I doubt that someone is cheap and/or bored enough to try to run a scam along these lines. But you never know with some people.

The 3/4-inch rule is exactly what happened. If your package was less than an ounce, it would have been $1.13 for a 3/4-inch-thick package. Your PayPal postage might have only done 41 cents, which is for a letter. If it were between 1 and 2 ounces, the same thing applies, because the rates would have been $1.30 vs 58 cents. They all increase 17 cents per ounce. It's just the baseline that varies (41 for letters, 80 for flats and $1.13 for packages).

What's odd is that I assumed it was over 3/4" thick when entering in the information for the postage and sent it as First Class Parcel and it was $1.30. So I have absolutely no idea where the extra 72 cents came from.

Since paypal puts DC on everything, it assumes that you are sending a parcel.

if you check the box that says, "the packages is irregular" or whatever - will this "cancel" the 3/4" rule ? whenever i send out something and i know its less than 3/4" thick, but its between 2-3 oz, it usually costs about 1.70 to send if i check that box

I don't know guys, I would be pretty ticked if I had to pay additional charges for shipping when it wasn't my (buyers) fault. I only buy on E-bay but based on pasts posts by sellers on this board, you guys seem to have the cost of S/H to a science. Not knowing if this item had to be picked up at the post office or not, it would seem that the buyer would have to go to the post office to pay the $.72 to get the card, when it should have been delivered to his mailbox.

If I was still living in the States, Saturday would be the only time I would be able to go to the post office.

I agree with everyone that the guy is being petty over the $.72. He should have just paid the $.72, send you an e-mail stating what happened and recommend you change your S/H charges to avoid future problems with other buyers.

Just my $.72 opinion.

COD is Cash on Delivery not postage due. Maybe the buyer has you confused with another seller.

I had this very same thing happen to me 3 times while dealing with Bowman Chrome. It was just my post office being a pain in the ass. I put packing peanuts in my bubble mailers for single cards to thicken them up and they still give me the occasional problem. This only occurs at my local post office. I have never had any problems from packages left at other post offices. Needless to say I hardly ever leave anything at my local post office.

I don't think an item less than 3/4" thick constitutes it being irregular. Here is the explanation of Irregular Packages from Paypal:

Sometimes a piece of mail requires additional postage because it is a certain shape or size that is difficult to process on mail sorting machines. These are examples of mail that could require additional postage:

Square envelopes
Packages larger than 34 inches long, or 17 inches wide, or 17 inches high
Envelopes on which the address is written parallel to the shorter edge
Packages weighing more than 35 pounds
Books and printed material weighing more than 25 pounds
Tubes and rolls

great. lol. i think the only reason why i check that box is to avoid getting screwed on the entire 3/4" thick deal. I drop all my bubble mailers off in the blue box and i think my PO only enforces the 3/4" thick/bendable rule if you drop it off at the counter (which i have seen happen to others)

f the usps and their rule changes and ensuing gray areas. f paypal, f ebay and F razor poker!
