Harper vs. Trout
Who do you think will hold more long term value (card prices, and beneficial to their team) and why??
|
If youre investing buy harper, tough to tell long term right now though, both can be future HOFS possibly
|
longterm, harper, only thing that may hurt him is the way he plays, one of these times the wall is gonna win!
trout had his 99% season, will still be good, but harper has more room to excel I believe. The power was there with harper in high school, college, and minors, trouts came from nowhere last year. |
Yeah Harper is younger has a much higher upside where as Trout basically had his career best season last year there isn't much for him to do but go down.

I think he will still be good, but just won't blow anyone away like he did last year. He just came out of nowhere and took MLB by storm. Kind of hard to repeat that. |
Cage match- I like the strength and textbook form Trout brings, but Harper seems like he would go for the eyes and genitals.
|
Harper will most likely play much better in 2013, raising his value.
Trout will most likely not play as good as he did in 2012 (10 WAR is unthinkable), decreasing his value a bit. |
Harper. /thread

Longterm I think the odds are nearly a coin flip. Assuming health doesn't become an issue, I'd give the edge to Trout. What he did last year wasn't just unexpected, it was historically unique. No one has ever put together a season like that. True, Harper is younger, but only one year younger.
Based on what we've seen we are splitting hairs. It's like asking who was better, Mickey Mantle or Ty Cobb? |

Also, considering Harper's numbers were some of the best for a 19 year old, ever. Also it would be hard for Trout to match what he did last year, which will begin to deflate his high card values. Trout also does not look to be in great shape as of now, while Harper looks like a Monster.... |
I'm not sure about long term value but I think Trout will always be a better player than Harper. I'm really not sold on Harper yet but I believe Trout is the real deal and will continue to be an amazing player although I doubt we'll see anymore 10+ WAR seasons.
|
Trout, no doubt. He wont be as good as last year, but .300 hitter 25+ HRs and 100+ Rbis for his career. Harper on the other hand, I think will be a bust, there, I said it.
|
Harper can't carry Trout's jock.

Your not alone on that prediction. I think it's very possible Harper will end up a bust. Trout on the other hand is a rare commodity, a true five tool player with both speed, power and an incredible glove. |
At worst, I see Harper being an above average player. I think he's going to be great, but I can't see him just completely flopping and finishing his career at, like, 34.
|
Card value wise, Harper has more room for growth. However, I don't think he will see the huge bump that Trout did last year. Trout's cards were very cheap out of the gate in 2009 (Elite's=$6-10, Sterling=$6-10, Chrome=$15-20). Harper's cards realized higher prices long before he was even in the bigs. In addition, Topps pretty much flooded the market with his autographs over the last 2 years. All that being said, I think Trout will always be a more well rounded player while Harper has the potential to be a 40+ hr guy year in, year out.
|
for those who say trout can only go down from here, I say how do you know? He is only one year older than Harper. He won't even hit his peak for a few more years. He could put up even better numbers this year with josh Hamilton in the lineup.
Plus, Harper is a wild card...I could easily see him getting caught up in some kind of trouble, either on or off the field with his personality. hopefully they will both do well and we can argue about this for the next ten years............. |

I think they both will hold value or go up
IMO you are looking at mantle and mays... im that big of a homer right now... As far as buying right now.. harper stuff is a steal... But it might only be a steal for few more months... trouts chrome 9.5 is what 500-600 harpers are 350... i can see this doubling this year or next... |

How can you even say that? As a NINETEEN YEAR OLD, he batted .270 (.340 OBP) with 22 homers, 9 triples, 26 doubles, and 18 SBs and scored nearly 100 runs. Even if he just does that for the rest of his career he would be a great player. But he will almost certainly do far better, as he was a 19 year old playing against grown men. |

Hes cocky. I hate cocky players, and that will be his undoing. |

That's a really poor narrative. Have you watched Trout play? If the media had drilled into peoples heads that he was cocky, people would probably say the same thing, both players though play with confidence, neither are cocky. --- To answer the OP's question though, I think Trout probably has the better long term value. Both should be amazing players, but I think Trout has a better shot at staying on the field (unless Harper eventually slows down a little). |
from what we've seen so far trout has the mental toughness to handle the pressure that comes with being a super star in baseball. Harper needs to mature a bit, Both have insane ability. Who holds their value longer? I haven't a clue but, it will be fun to watch!

So you are being biased? Ok that is a great reason for why Harper will be a bust  |
Trout will have a 40/40 season this year ;)
