I could care less that the man is gay. and I don't mean that in a negative way . if he can play ...he can play

but is this a big deal ,or just another player signing a 10 day contract

Zacky1053 02-23-2014 04:34 PM

4 pts, 4 rpg in his career.

I have no problem he's gay either but I can't help but believe it's about publicity.

hotbox 02-23-2014 04:35 PM

The Nets needed frontcourt help, but Collins won't help too much. I'm happy to have him on the team anyway.

EMD34 02-23-2014 04:35 PM

I think it has become a little over-blown, but the first openly gay player in the NBA is somewhat of a big deal. The fact that Prokhorov is the one who's team signed him is interesting considering how Russians typically feel about gay people.

SMH.... So fitting!

The signing of an openly gay athlete will be a big deal....and then it will blow over right around the time the 10 day contract is up. I get that the Nets are looking for frontcourt help but I am not sure this is the guy that will provide it. I wonder why they didn't make a better run at Glen Davis. At least Davis can do it in the NBA. Either way, props to Jason Collins for being able to collect another NBA paycheck, openly gay or not.

Big Baby was their first choice, but he chose LA. Just more minutes for him there.

Not sure what you're getting at.

I definitely feel it's about the publicity (and a little bit about rebounding), but I don't think it'll get that much. That said, he does get to officially be the first openly gay athlete to play in a game now in the four major sports...so Michael Sam gets to be 2nd haha.

(Although technically Glenn Burke came first...he just wasn't as publicly known...blame the lack of internet back then).

What's interesting is the signing is all over Twitter and Facebook yet virtually no mention of how good of a player Collins is or what type of impact he'll make. Maybe that's a sign.

I just don't want the LGBT going nuts if the Nets don't give him another contract should he not play well.

Yeah kinda seems it. It's a shame, the Nets needs a board crasher with Reggie Evans now gone and Collins fits that so it makes sense...but no one's talking about that yet. Weird.

I really don't think they will. I mean the fact that he's even being signed is pretty big...there are people who thought him coming out meant he wouldn't get signed again...like the same people who think Michael Sam's draft stock will now fall.

They'll be happy he gets signed at all especially given his age/talent at this point. It won't be a big deal when his contract runs out.

It seems it's POSSIBLE that a lack of minutes throughout his career could explain the low numbers but one could also argue if he was that good he would be getting minutes.

Word is he looked good in the workout the Nets held for him. Had they not just traded Reggie Evans I don't think they would have signed him. They need a big body. Collins fits that Bill. He's essentially a third string C behind Blatche and Plumlee, so not a lot of pressure on him.

yankeesfan24 02-23-2014 04:55 PM

If he contributes, who cares? I wish the nets would have gotten Ivan Johnson instead, but they still might sign him too

Yeah he's 35 now and was never a real great player to begin with...but he's a good second line big and that's what the Nets need now with Evans gone.

MikeMamba 02-23-2014 04:56 PM

garbage player

Exactly. I was actually kind of surprised they looked at Big Baby...he's more of an offensive guy and the Nets were looking to fill in a defensive presence. Collins fits better than Baby.

sportzluvr1 02-23-2014 04:56 PM

If him being openly gay played ANY part in the Nets signing him instead of Glen Davis, the Nets organization should be ashamed of themselves.

On the other hand, with a Russian owner and the foul stance on homosexual rights that Russia takes, I find it hard to believe that had anything to do with it.

And Evans was awesome? Lol we're talking like the 14th-15th guy on a roster, 3rd center off the bench. He's not coming in to play 30 mpg.

Evans was a beast on the boards (his rebounds per 48 numbers were crazy for a number of years) but can't shoot worth a lick. It explains why he doesn't get the minutes to be among the league leaders in boards.

As an Iowa fan I wish he did more than rebound, as valuable as that is.

There are definitely a few times I added Evans in fantasy when I needed like 8 rebounds quick haha

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember GIO being pretty religious and not approving of many lifestyles.

Don't have the numbers from this season, but his WORST season in terms of rebounds per 48 was 15.2 in 2008-2009.

MavsRChamps 02-23-2014 05:04 PM

I don't think this is for publicity / marketing like some people have said, but even if it is, I don't even find that to be a bad thing. If that was a reason, I actually commend the Nets on doing this because some things are bigger than basketball. Breaking a barrier such as this one is one of those things.
