A step in the right direction.

He always wanted to be a fish. He really just missed Dee Gordon.

USAFDODGERS 10-29-2015 09:08 AM

I'm happy for Mattingly he gets a young team he can coach and develop while also improving/developing his "in game" managerial skills without the pressure of the LA media and being the manager of the most expensive team in baseball history.

I won't say Mattingly is great coach by any means but I think this hire will improve both him and the franchise.

poppincurbs 10-29-2015 09:23 AM

Incredibly stoked for this. Marlins have a lot of young talent, without the World Series or bust attitude from the fans. I'm sure he'll have plenty of freedom, as opposed to the new Dodgers front office which was playing him like a puppet.

I'm pumped to watch Dee Gordon play again, and be able to watch Stanton play everyday! Go Marlins!

SportsAutoFreak 10-29-2015 09:46 AM

I heard his name being connected to the Marlins. He earned it after three straight N.L. West crowns.

Looks like a great place to learn to craft, but dang. That ownership and fanbase situation is quite something to walk into.

He was selling a lot of his Dodgers stuff when they let go of Mattingly I believe.

I mean I can understand collecting Don

But why collect the team and then sell when leaves?

Don was with the Dodgers for 5 years and I liked the team... Now he's not, and I don't really care for the cards (or Dodgers) and would rather have money. Don't see what the big deal is, people switch PC stuff all of the time???

I could never understand PCing a team simply because of the manager but if he gets pleasure from it then more power to him.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with it. To each his own.

titletowncards 10-29-2015 12:12 PM

I was really hoping this would happen. Mattingly was my favorite player during his playing days and now he gets to manage my favorite team. Great for both parties imo, good young team to work with. :D

I never said there was anything wrong with it, I just find it different

I was honestly just confused. I just think Its odd (kinda interesting) how you switch your PC/rooting when the manager leaves.

rttrffg2012 10-29-2015 12:40 PM

Ahhhh.....one step closer to becoming the Yanks manager.
Then multiple championships, then the HOF!

Interesting and nice move by the Fish.

I thought they would be provocative and hire a quant-crazed sabremetric nut with little on-field experience, but they went the traditional route.

They asked their season ticket holders. 3 wanted Mattingly, 1 was unsure, 1 asked if Billy Martin was still available, and the 6th said he was late for Golden Corral's early bird special and hung up on them.

limitedplay 10-29-2015 01:57 PM

Thats good. He got screwed in LA. Fans have been out to get him from day one. Just look at that line up he had. Ethier, kemp, puig. Dodger fans thought that was best outfield in baseball. Utley, rollins, kendrick infield. No manager could have done better. They way dodgers fans talk youd think they had griffey mantle and aaron in the outfield and pujols at first and bench playing catcher.

As a Dodger fan, I was going to say something cheeky, but I'll move on and endorse this comment.:D

Welcome aboard. This was a great move for the Marlins. He can develop as a coach and not have the pressure of the LA market. Been a fan of Donnie baseball all my life. They finished the season strong last year without big G in the lineup. Hopefully we can get some strong front line pitching and some reliable bullpen arms. I like the talent position wise
