1921 E121 American Caramel Series of 80 Babe Ruth PSA 4 MK to SGC 3.5

Sold on 5/6/2018 as a PSA 4 MK by Robert Edward Auctions (REA) to an unknown buyer for $15,600.00
Consigned to PWCC and sold on 9/9/2018 as a SGC 3.5 for $32,911.00
Value gain of $17,311.00!

This card is another hobby monster PWCC has claimed was graded at the 2018 National Sports Collectors Convention (NSCC). Like some of the others, including the almost $88,000 2014 Cracker Jack SGC 5 Joe Jackson, this card has been chemically whitened.

On the reverse image, two areas are circled in red. There are flaws in the letters p and c in the word "pictures" on the back. There is also a pair of adjacent print dots that the PSA 4 MK and the SGC 3.5 have in common. I saw neither flaw on any of the other backs of 1921 E121 Babe Ruth cards in VCP or Google Images. It is the same card.

The MK designation from PSA is due to writing in both ink and pencil on the card's reverse. The marks were removed prior to the card's grading at the 2018 NSCC by SGC. The PWCC auction description of the SGC 3.5 notes that the card has an "almost imperceptible amount of wear to in a couple minor areas of the reverse." The third image in this post shows the SGC 3.5 reverse with the brightness filter turned down to -100. You can see darkness in the area where the ink and pencil once were. It is my contention that the card doctor first "bleached" the card and the mark still remained. Therefore, to get rid of it completely, he created artificial wear on the back, scuffing the area.

Lastly, there is less than a three month gap between the time the card was won (5/6/18) and the start of the 2018 NSCC (8/1/18). It is my opinion that the buyer of this card from REA is either complicit in or is the actual card doctor who altered this card and did not disclose this information to the new buyer prior to its PWCC sale.
