Altered is fake. Where's the pride in that? Might as well print out a copy on your printer. Why don't you display that? You don't because you want a clean card that looks pack fresh without the price attached. The value in high grade cards is that they survived without damage. That's the rarity considering so many are made. Unlike art, where pieces are 1/1.
So you're willing to pay "normal" price for an altered card? It's not like these altered cards are at a discount. That's fine until you go to sell it and it's discovered that PSA 8 you bought is really altered and just a PSA 2 or unable to be holdered. You overpaid. Me, I like money.
