I didn’t like the film but other audience members were clapping and cheer at parts.
The movies jumps around from set piece to set piece. The story introduces a bunch of new characters who don’t really add any value to the plot. They shouldn’t have shoehorned Leia into the film. The Jedi training stuff could have been shortened by mentioning it in the title crawl.
Ford is there only because they don’t have enough Carrie Fisher footage and dialogue to make the scene work.
It seems to hit some of the same story beats as Return of the Jedi:
ROTJ: Threepio’s programming won’t allow him impersonate a deity and save the team. TROS: He can’t verbalize the ciphers to help the team.
ROTJ: Ewoks help fight the empire. TROS: AWOL Stormtroopers help fight the First Order
ROTJ and TROS: Giant fleets facing off.
ROTJ and TROS: Celebrations in the forest. Friends hug, everyone is happy.
