I am having a hard time understanding the logic of some in this thread. The USA and Canada are countries of law and order, not anarchy. If you are arrested you get in the police car and eventually get your day in court. You're presumed innocent until the state can prove you are guilty of an offense.
You don’t have the right to fight the cops violently, take a weapon and run away from the system. The police are sworn to uphold the law and order system. They are part of the criminal court process. If you don’t like the system you can’t decide you’re entitled to reject it. If the guy simply got in the back of the car, he would be alive today.
They had a guy who had no respect for public safety and drove intoxicated, then violently resisted arrest, and had a weapon. I would not want that person on the loose in my neighborhood. With a criminal mindset who knows what he is capable of when trying to escape( carjacking, assault, etc). He already proved he has no respect for law, order, or the public.
Don’t forget the police are trying to make split decisions under duress and adrenaline. They have a right to go home to their families at the end of their shift. They are also sworn to protect the public. This issue is not only about a threat to the cops, but the public at large. The law recognizes this, and the legal standard is not an actual threat, but a perceived threat to the safety of the public or themselves.
