You would think so but the GOP has been stripping the governor powers after they lost those elections, they had been refusing for years to appoint Obama judicial nominees, etc. They get more and more bold and keep retaining their support no matter what. I don't think they are that concerned about a potential political backlash. I think the threat of the potential violence that could erupt would give them more pause than anything. Plus like you said, the GOP has the opportunity to drop Trump since he already gave them what they wanted. He has packed the courts and maintained or gained GOP seats in Congress. They probably don't need anything else from Trump at this point. He can be discarded.
