The opinion that Trump is sewing distrust in the election is short-sighted though. Just four years ago at this very same time, it was the Democratic party who said the election was rigged. 70% of Dems said the election was stolen, with the help of Russia. Did that sow distrust in Democracy? Did that matter?
The answer to that is also no. It's just the losing team being big babies. That's literally all it is because four years after all of that nonsense, we had another election and now those very same people who said the election was rigged, say the election process is fair and awesome! Imagine that; when you win, you love it and when you lose, you cry.
The feeling of "costs" you mention a lot of people have has nothing to do with Democracy or elections or real fear. It has more to do w/ people simply being told something matters that they would otherwise not care about; and getting it drilled into their mind that they should feel. And they do. Just like your example to the transition of power; I have not seen a single instance of Joe Biden saying he is being hampered in any way, I see nothing that suggests the short delay matters at all to him or his team; yet it was front page, Red Alert, Defcon 1 chatter for a good week and everyone lost their minds.
