But in the NL he would automatically be a 2 way player - & an even more valuable one. (& the Chicago option would have paired him with Maddon, though I doubt that factored in.
My memory is that it was known that he would prefer a west coast team. Maybe there just weren’t close offers from the NL West.
Not that big a deal, just look forward to someone asking Ohtani about the final decision many years from now.
