Offseason wipeout? What's an offseason? The last few years the baseball card "offseason" consisted of the day before, the day of, and the day after Thanksgiving. That's it. There is no more offseason.
I know, I know. There's going to be a work stoppage and baseball will never be played again and all the fans will run for the hills and it will be nuclear fallout for the sport. Makes sense. I can see a bunch of rich people choosing to ruin what they've turned into a multi-billion dollar empire because they can't figure out how to split up the existing billions of dollars.
This isn't 1994. We're not talking about ticket sales and $6 beers. Live content that draws dependable live audiences is king. Nobody DVRs a live baseball game and then watches it five days later.
Some of these teams have signed multi-billion dollar contracts with their home television networks. You don't think there are clauses and contingencies in there that protect those networks from a loss of such content? You don't think they trigger other clauses and contingencies not in the owners' favor?
The amount of money they make just on branding alone dwarfs '94 figures. The two situations couldn't be less similar.
There isn't going to be a work stoppage. Feel free to put that on a poster.
