Two things. After recently watching the new movie/documentary -- THE LAST LEONARDO, in which a rich Russian ends up buying a painting that may or may not be Leonardo da Vinci (he told his right-hand man to find him nice art to invest in). The guy said he'd pay up to $130 mil for this painting. So he did. Guess what? That "friend" actually got the painting for $80 mil and kept the difference!
But I don't think you're going to lose a friend if this goes south. He obviously has money to burn, and just thinks it would be fun to do this. I have had friends like this that, when walking thru a casino, would just throw a thousand dollars down on one hand of black jack as we were walking out, just to see what happens.
Now, that being said -- I have an OJ Simpson rookie card, and a Walter Payton rookie card, NOT GRADED, but probably would be graded a 7. I'd probably sell one of those for $5,000. Message me (also, lots and lots of vintage basketball cards I'll be selling soon, if you want a cross section of Wilt, Alcindor, Oscar, West, Maravich, Erving cards...that would equal $5,000. Again, PM me.
