Past: 100 million total viewers, 5 million watching NBA.
Now: 50 million total viewers, 4 million watching NBA.

Even though the above are just random numbers, this is what's happening. NBA's viewers declined, but not inline with overall TV viewership. Where they may have had a 5% TV market share, they now how an 8% TV market share.

NBA has all the leverage, because if you want guaranteed eyeballs and the bulk of TV eyeballs, you need the NBA.

If you want live TV watchers, sports are the only way to get them. I don't watch TV, but if I'm watching The Challenge it's been DVR'd and I'm fast forwarding through the commercials. NBA Finals, I'm watching live and so I'll see the commercials.
Fantastic explanation Geech. The doom and gloom always gloat about declining viewership, while always avoiding the fact that all TV is down. Live sports are the only thing that people feel like they absolutely have to watch live. More money for the cap is good, hopefully this time they graduate it in so we don’t end up with another KD to the Warriors situation… Unless it’s Zion to the Warriors
