Doesn’t matter if you actually do win and pay for it. By bidding, you’ve created the false appearance of interest in the item. How many of the other 19 bids on the card are from people with the same mind set? Don’t actually want the item, but bid on it anyway. What if it was half or less?
There’s no reason to bid early on an item unless you plan to actually pursue in extended bidding if the price was right. There are 11 Luka items in this round. All of them well under market. Would it be cool with you if I placed a bid on all of them right now? I’ll pay if I win, but I’m not bidding any further and I’m not actually interested in winning. You don’t bid for steals with a week left in the auction. You wait until right before extended bidding.

Agree to disagree I guess. By your definition, if someone lists a $100,000 card via ebay auction starting at $0.99 then every bid from $1 to $30k or so would be a shill bid. I actually agree that the people who bid super low on expensive cards they have a 0% chance of winning are incredibly weird, but I also wouldn't call them shill bidders.
