This is a key point. It doesn’t really matter if a player captivates the hobby year after year. We can expect some undulations in interest. Even Pujols, who basically has Hank Aaron’s stat line, has fallen out of favor, and then back in.

Remember when the hobby went nuts for Christian Yelich? He’d been a decent player but fell short of the hype for five long seasons. Then, just like that, the hobby went nuts for him.

If Vlad/Soto/Acuna/Wander (I’m not including Tatis) have some uneven early years, that’s not going to stop us from clamoring for their cards when they’re in their late 20s and hitting 50 homers, batting .350, or chasing Triple Crowns.
