I don't think anyone in favor of the expanded playoff is arguing that we're going to see #12 seeds going all the way. It's more that:

- We actually legitimize the full slate of FBS games since even a G5 team can make the playoff if they go undefeated, win their conference, and finish in the Top 15.

- P5 teams—not named Alabama, Ohio State, or Georgia—who finish with a single loss get the same access afforded to Alabama, Ohio State, or Georgia when they finish with a single loss.

- We safeguard against ref shenanigans. Oklahoma got screwed after recovering the onside kick against Oregon in 2006. Texas A&M got screwed when the Alabama clock operator ran an extra three seconds off the clock and only got one shot from the goal line instead of two. And there are dozens of other egregious examples. An expanded playoff does these teams right.
I'm not against any of that. I think the limit should have been six if they were going to expand. Every conference would have the opportunity to get a team in, but it wouldn't be guaranteed if their champion was 8-5 and pulled off one upset in the CCG.

Edit: I should have said every P5 conference plus one G5.
