I don't think there's anything wrong with that. He's just trying to prolong his career and entertain fans. He's been having problems staying healthy in recent years regardless, so I don't know how much it really matters in the grand scheme of things.
And I don't know why anyone assumes Kareem and MJ didn't take stuff. They both played at a high level and were very durable well into their 30s -- that's not normal.

MJ is suspect look at his body in his rookie season and then he realized he needed to get stronger and gained 20 pounds of muscle and shed 10 of fat and maintained his gains throughout the season.
Anybody who has ever lifted weights knows running and jumping are complete opposite of what you are supposed to do maintain weightlifting gains. A typical weightlifter is supposed to rest and do minimal activities or they will injure themselves or burn of the gains.
