I won’t go straight to disagreeing, but tell us who the HOFers were that people told you to put money into when you were younger.
Here’s why I ask… I started collecting in 1985 too, and HOFers at that time included people like McCovey, Yaz, and Brock. All great players, but if I was told to invest in them (and did) at that time, I would have missed out on the opportunity to put money into better investments. Now - if they advised (and you abided) recommendations for Mantle, Mays, etc - you may have done fine.
Just looking for context here, because there was a LOT of money to be made in prospects over the years depending on when you got in and out.
