So I'll probably only get 1-2 days at the show then 2-3 days "touring" Chicago. It's for both our 20th anniversary and my 50th birthday.
If you are taking this as a family vacation, not just a 5 day binge of the National, my suggestion is not the hotel route. If your entire purpose is to spend every waking hour immersed in baseball cards, sure, book the hotel right across the street. But if you aren't tethered to the convention center, I would rent a Vrbo/AirBnB in the area and use it as home base. My family did that last year. We spent 10 days in Chicago. We rented a house in a nice residential neighborhood about 10 minutes east of the convention center. Parking is sufficient around the show, so no need to worry about staying right there. And those neighborhoods have quick access to the interstate to get virtually anywhere you want to go. Being on the north side of town, we went to a Cubs game, a White Sox game, and even drove up to Milwaukee to catch a Brewers game, go to the zoo up there, and to Six Flags. All easy drives from the Rosemont area. And the best part is, the 3 bedroom house we rented was cheaper than the hotels.
