Sports journalism is a dying breed. It is selling out to entertainment. Simply covering sports wasn't paying their bills. They have their own personallities (moreso, characters) that they want you to be invested in more than the athletes they talk about. They use these characters to push whatever that outlet wants you to think, talk about, etc.
Sports media is increasingly thinking more and more highly of itself as if it is on the same level if not higher than sports itself.
It is sad, but it has been happening for awhile. I used to love NFL Network Gameday morning, but it too go infiltrated by bits and gags and over-the-top goofiness in hopes of keeping viewer interest.

Media in general has gone from reporting news to having to generate profit and have enough content for 24 hours of coverage. In the sports side that means focusing on narratives over data.
