I guess that was my point, teams do this for players like Federov, too good of a player to let anyone wear the number again, but not quite at the point of it officially getting retired.

But my point was for guys like McCarty, Draper, Holmstrom (who I believe deserves to be in the HOF but that's something else entirely), Maltby, etc.

They're never going to have the official or unofficial number retirement, I think that those types of guys who are more popular among fans than some of the stars shouldn't have those numbers handed out right after they retire.
