Default Advice wanted: converting modern collection to vintage

Hi all. I’m a newbie here and I was hoping to get your opinions on selling/trading some modern cards and wax in order to complete a mid-grade 1956 Topps set. As I see it, I can try to sell the cards on a site like this, sell them on eBay myself, have someone like pwcc or probstein sell them on eBay, or try to trade them. I thought I would post on here because people seem helpful and knowledgeable about modern cards in particular.

To be specific, I am looking to move

1. 2011 Topps Update gold mike trout RC psa 10
2. 2015 topps heritage high Francisco Lindor RC Red real one auto #12/66 (jersey number) psa 10
3. 1996 leaf signature bronze Mariano Rivera auto psa (not finished grading, but I expect 8 or 9)
4. 2 hobby boxes of 2015 topps heritage high

I also have a few 1956 duplicates to trade/sell as well. This thread is to solicit advice, but I may end up posting them in the b/s/t board. Thanks in advance for reading and commenting.

One more thing, I have been building the 1956 set for more than 10 years, so I am not in a rush. If you think it’s best to wait until the spring, that’s fine with me.

Sit on the modern cards u listed and keep acquiring your 56s. Or go to trade section and try to move modern. 10 years is too long to acquire a 56 set unless u have top cards already and are just trying to acquire high grade others. If you've been trying to acquire 56 set u should have gotten most of them 5+ years ago. Seems fishy too me.

As someone who has been working on a 1968 set for 12 plus years, I can see it ,lol. Yes I could just buy them all on ebay in a day, but haven't. Ill go a year or two without adding a card to the set. But, I'm down to about 30 cards to finish it now.

To the OP. I would hold onto that Trout. The value is only going to go up. Just stop putting any money into current cards (wax or singles) and devote all that money from here on to completing the 56 set.

I have been trying to acquire 64 giants set in psa 8 for 6 years and understand the wait, but still seems fishy to me. Need more info on where op is at with 56 set... And not San Fran Giants, topps giants

This is one of the things comc.com was made for.

Thanks for the posts. I haven’t used comc, but of course have seen items on eBay sold through them. Do people like using it?

I’m sorry this seems fishy to a few of you, but I am going slow for my 56 set for two reasons. Firstly, I don’t have a lot of money to throw at it, so I watch eBay auctions like a gd hawk and go after good deals, and most of the cards I chase are ungraded. Secondly, I also used to like busting the occasional wax to relive my childhood a bit. I have been fortunate to get some decent ones, but I have also gotten my fair share of Victor Martinez game used as the best card in hobby boxes. I have grown tired of chasing “hits” and think it’s wiser to simply devote what little money I put to this hobby towards completing the 56.

Right now, I am about 80% complete but I would really like to upgrade some of my star cards. In particular, the mantle, Clemente, and Ted Williams.

My thought was to likely hold on to the trout a while, but other people could probably derive more enjoyment for some of my other cards. It’s hard for me to justify keeping 2 boxes of 2015 heritage high when I really want a psa 6 Clemente.

Here’s a few pics to try to convert some non-believers who find my OP incredulous.

I'd say go for it! Late last year I bought an 2011 update diamond trout for $265, which sold in March for $925. With that money and a couple of random sales, I was able to jump start my 1956 mid grade set. I ended up buying for around $950 the following: Aaron 4.5, Williams 5.5, Koufax 5.5, Mays 5, Clemente 5 and Robinson 5.5.

I've currently completed 20% of the set, so it will be a slow process. I'd like to make a couple good sales to get the Mantle, which would get me over the hump. Good luck!

Nice snag eliseomo! I have really enjoyed building my 56 set. Those cards are beautiful and there are so many iconic players. I have a bunch that I am debating sending to psa or sgc. For cards I want to sell or trade it makes a lot of sense, but for my own PC I am not sure.

Try net54. Best place to buy vintage hands down. Some of those guys dabble in modern and are willing to make a deal.

Send me a message if you need more info.
