Default The FIRST Rare Insert Set

It was the mid-90s... every one was gaga for refractors and shiny things. Manufacturers were making scarce parallels as low as only 20 made! Things seemed to have no limit to having an ultra rare limited parallel being made. They even started incorporating game used on to cards! Things were insane! Then in 1997, Upper Deck created another industry first. In 1997 Upper Deck Football they included an insert where only 100 of each card were made. Up until now, the scarcest manufactured cards were all parallels. With the rarest of inserts having print runs only as low at 500. Put it quite frank, a card with a print run of 2000 was rare, let alone a set with only 2000 total.
To give a little more background… as of 11/25/22, only 12 of the 2000 cards were graded between psa and BGS… and out of those 12, only 6 of the 20 cards in the set have been graded.
WITHOUT FURTHER ADO!
AFTER SEVEN YEARS OF COLLECTING!
I give you the first ultra rare insert set, limited to only 100 made, 1997 Upper Deck Football MVPs Gold COMPLETE set!!!!

Awesome progress on that set.

But I'm begging you to please get your flickr in order because you've got an enthusiastic follow right here.

For all the cards I have ever seen or forgotten about, I have never seen these even in a Beckett. Thank you for letting the rest of us in on this hidden Treasure of a insert set.

Dude... buy it... this is one of those... one shot or a long wait sets... I’ve worked on this set for over 2 years and most all I’ve seen only once or twice... the Marino is why I did this set...

I collected Marino hard core. I had EVERY Marino insert, except this one card. My history with this Marino is....

First seeing it in 2003. Didn’t know what it was at first as I never saw one. I was in college. By 2003 all inserts had already started dropping as GUd and Autos became the thing. A basic insert /100 would sell in the 30-50 range. It sold for over $120. I was shocked. Fast forward to 2007 one was listed by Burbank for $200. I still needed a lot of inserts so I didn’t buy it. And Burbank didn’t list with a picture. So I never bought it. One didn’t pop up again until December 2013. A $60 BIN caused much rejoicing. I slowed dow on and sold off a lot of Marino due to a divorce, but this one I couldn’t let go. I made a low ball offer on the Farve 1/100 and it was accepted. Picked up a lot very quickly and everyone I could find since then. I took too long to decide on the set, if I decided sooner, I would only be missing the Aikman. Grab the Ricky. Don’t be me. Lol.

Those are sharp cards. When the madness began...1997 was an amazing year.

Stop posting these terrible cards. They are ugly and overvalued. Nobody cares about them

I honestly thought I knew every football card set from them mid-1980s until the mid 2000s because of my Elway/Broncos collection, but I have absolutely never heard of these before. Very cool.

I didn't even know what this card was when I bought it. I collected all through the 90s and had never seen it, even being a know it all teenager. When I saw it pop up I was quick to get it and am glad I did. A very nice card that looks great on display.

Now offering a $25 bounty each to whoever can help me find the last two I need. Troy Aikman and Marcus Allen.

1997 and 1998 were beautiful years for the hobby. Probably my nostalgia talking, but I'd probably rate them #1 and #2 all-time as far as quality, innovation, and fun for collecting.

And it looks like Upper Deck really took things to next level in 98 with their Quantum /25's. I might have to pick up some of those some day.

I feel you in the search for /100's. It's been almost four years and just this week I found my 45th out 50 2005 Topps Chrome "Golden Anniversary" refractor (Michael Strahan). Who knows how long it will be before I can find the last five listed in my signature. But hey, chasing long-forgotten inserts is way more fulfilling than rushing from overpriced, over-hyped rookie to overpriced, over-hyped rookie—right?

Best of luck on your search.

Good luck finding the last few. I understand your quest as a fellow rare set collector. This set is not only rare but unknown to most collectors so that’s another obstacle. I have never seen one in person so I am no help, sorry. They will pop up eventually so you’ve got that going for you. GL
