Default Can we talk about Pete Crow-Armstrong?

His hitting has been surprising. He is a legit above average hitter with uber elite defense and baserunning. He already had 1.5 fWAR, ranked 6th in MLB.

PCA really going to be this good? We talking about potentially MVP numbers

was thinking this yesterday. Didn't realize his bat would be this good...

but yeah, if he keeps these numbers up with that glove, MVP / Top 5 player in baseball.

edit: his Savant page tells a different story about his bat.....interesting

He already has 5 hr and 10 sb. He finished spring training well and has continued into the regular season. I like the kid.

He's started out strong. The NL Central is winnable this year too.

He’s not THIS good but he’s pretty good. I’m a cubs fan so already have started PCing him a bit, especially since his prices aren’t astronomical.

PCA was pretty rough with the bat last year with the Cubs in the first half. Coming in a lot as a late inning defensive replacement (facing tough lefty relievers) and then full time CF when Bellinger got hurt. Around late July he started to hit a little and have big games.
Since late July '24 he's 289/336/490 with 12 HRs 19 SB in 82 games. 3.9 fWAR
With his Defense and speed his floor seems to be around 5 WAR - if he is an avg bat its 6+ WAR - if he can stay around 120 wRC+ and stays healthy all year 8+ WAR and he'll be in the MVP conversation.

Missed out on a really nice looking 2024 light board. Love those cards, he wanted 180 though couldn’t pull the trigger as the last sales were 95 and 120.

Dynamic defender makes tough plays look almost easy. Seems to read balls off the bat extremely well and tracks (like most decent OFs), so good jumps plus elite speed equals crazy range.

His bat, on the other hand, is anything but sure-fire. Yes, there's plenty of potential, but "potential just means you ain't done nothing yet." The 25-HR power potential is easily there.

However, he's shown flashes of plate discipline and pitch recognition. What boggles me a bit is that he always seems to regress. I don't know if it's a lack of focus/prep/game-planning, head getting too big, or what, but until he can put it together for a full season, I'm wary about how consistent he can be.

Remember when everyone thought Bellinger would be a perennial MVP contender? Sure, injuries began his derailment, but my point is that PCA hasn't even hit for a full season, so MVP talk seems crazy to me. Let's let the kid figure out big league pitchers before crowning him anything. Right now he's hot, but if his slumps go as long as his hot streaks then this is all moot.

His underlying numbers (expected stats and quality of contact numbers) suggest he's an average to a slightly above average hitter right now. He's way outperforming his expected stats, and he'll decline a bit. With his stellar CF play, he'll be good for WAR and Gold Gloves for years if he avoids injuries that sap his athleticism. He looks to be in the same category as Andruw Jones, Torrii Hunter, and Jim Edmonds to me. Awesome players who get just a smidgen of hobby attention, but are on the lower end of stars.

He's off to a great start.

But as Keith Law would say....small sample size.....you can't really tell too much about a hitter until he's up to 250-300 PA.....if he's still hitting this well in August, then it'll be worth talking about.

His BB/K ratio isn't very good (6/26), and the fact that's only got the 4th highest OPS+ on the team tells you that the entire team has been benefitting from a few "wind blowing out" games at Wrigley.

Fun player to watch, due for a ton of regression based on his Savant metrics. Ride the wave while you can.

His name is too complicated, will never be a superstar.
