Default Watch out for fake Ultimate Collection Michael Jordan buybacks

I had been sharing these in the Rolling Thread for 90s Fakes and Backdoored Cards but still seeing more examples for sale, figured it might help to start a dedicated thread.

Several counterfeit 2004 Ultimate Collection Michael Jordan Buybacks have recently hit the market. Recommend taking a really good look at the cards and certifications, if looking to acquire a copy.

This one is ending soon.

A couple other fakes that were recently listed/sold on eBay.

This psa authenticated copy (deactivated) was sold on cardhobby earlier this month and the same seller, has another fake copy currently listed.

On this topic, I did find another recent psa authenticated copy (graded after they deactivated several copies, upon learning of the fakes), but am holding back sharing, until I can confirm the card is bad.

I don’t equate a Backdoored copy in the same category as a forgery. The Backdoored cards are just product that didn’t make it into the boxes because they were extra’s do to damage exchange or the Company went under and wasn’t able to ship the product out.

We hear all the time about redemption pulls that the Company is not able to locate so a Backdoored copy is sent to replace it. The redemption wasn’t in the name of the card received therefore utilizing a entirely different card in it’s place is equal to a backdoor card. Blowout has a thread about different cards being used by Companies as their redemption, and IMO they are Backdoored cards.

Not sure where the backdoored discussion comes from, but these examples are fake/counterfeit buybacks, with bogus "Upper Deck" certification.

I guess it's possible the actual cards were backdoored, but not as presented (signed and authenticated).

PSA's been the go-to for the at-home HOF signees. They've been slabbing Will Hauser's submissions for years...and not letting up.

It's hilarious how obviously bad they are. Yet the general public still heralds Joe Orlando's creation as the overtly stringent creme de la creme.

Was able to confirm the authentication issues with additional photos and PSA has similarly deactivated the cert, so I thought it would be good to document for future reference, should the card surface again.

wow, this is big news; I have always liked the look of these MJ buybacks.

May I ask:
How do you find out if they are fake?
Do you confirm the hologram/certificate #s with Upper Deck directly?

Yeah, the real ones are usually really nice.

Upper Deck wasn't much help at all, but I did reach out, as the certs are certainly one issue.
With the authentication companies already failing to catch the fakes, it's probably not a good idea to publicly highlight the specific flaws and assist the scammers. If you (anyone) has question, feel free to reach out via PM.

On a Lebron buyback, I emailed UD a few years ago and they were quite helpful and were able to confirm that it was legit, the Serial # on the holos matched [I had no doubts but wanted to be 100% sure before selling].

Might just depend on who you got that day.

My original communication was just via a random CS rep, but it's interesting to know you were able to get some confirmation. Not that it's needed, but maybe I'll try again. I was previously informed there wasn't any database for the buyback certs, only signed memorabilia.

Another one of these was listed today, and it is the first duplicate I've seen. Could be a lot of these out there, if the full serial run(s) were produced.

The psa copy (21/25) seen in the OP is already deactivated, and 22/25 is currently on eBay.

Another fake copy, apparently was either traded for or purchased at the National.
Currently listed on eBay.

That's a shame. I like the look of 2004 UC better than 2003, can see why it might get faked.

Imagine spending real MJ money for a fake MJ. I feel bad for that guy.

Newer people to the game must not know how many fakes there are. Some of those 20-year-old PSA slabs are super suspect. PSA didn't recognize the fake and trimming epidemic until way too late. They were experts at Vintage and were trying to take market share from BGS on modern stuff. This was around the time of MJ's retirement, and mania for his cards was real. The market share grab worked, but there are still a dangerous number of fakes in mid-2000s PSA slabs because the graders didn't know what to look for at the time.

Androgynous Jeff Wittek got the ACEO game in a chokehold. Ain't nobody safe.

Not surprising at all, it's still listed on eBay and the comment of it being fake on sellers IG was removed (not sure if by IG user or commenter)

This hobby sucks more and more every day

That is my comment on the IG post. Maybe as the source it's still viewable, but it wasn't deleted on my end.

Nice find. There are several of those fakes in circulation.
Similar fake Kobe and Curry were sold last year. Humorously, the Kobe was highlighted by a hobby news site, as one of the most watched items on eBay. Lots of inexperienced people in the hobby.

Makes sense. I just noticed it today when I went to go see if he even acknowledged it and the comment was gone/hidden on my end

Owner has pulled the eBay listing, and posted on that IG thread they will have the Jordan reviewed. Will be interesting to see which grading company (if that's the plan), they use to review the card.
