Default Auston Matthews PSA 10s

Hey guys,

This year I had bought a McDavid and Matthews PSA 10 to keep for my PC moving forward. I thought the Matthews, especially a few months back, was a deal trading at sometimes 50% less than the McDavid when I found a deal and bought up a bundle as an "investment lot" to hopefully increase in value and cover the expense of my PC ones moving forward. I have never done hockey so was just wondering when the best time to sell my 5 Auston Matthews Young gun psa 10s would be? With the leafs in great position I assume put them up right as the season is starting to close like other sports, always afraid of them getting knocked out early (Sorry Leafs fans, but it's true!).

First time in hockey cards so any advice is appreciated.

Unless you need some cash I wouldn't sell them. Matthews is young and continues to improve his overall game. He is locked into the biggest hockey market in the world for 3 more years and if he can make a bigger impact his card prices will jump big time. IMO, he is good enough to do so.

Another way to sell them is to let them go yearly. Sell them individually, a couple this year, and couple next year, etc, This way you don't have a bunch money tied up and sitting.

yea I'd hold for awhile. His stock will rise as he wins individual awards. Leafs wont win a cup with current team but they have a window until Rielly needs a raise.

There's also the potential the USA win the Olympics next year and if he's a star man for them it could contribute to rise in price.

I'm a firm believer that Matthews leaves the cesspool that is the Toronto market and media and heads south in 3-1/2 years. That's purely speculation but since this is an investment it's warranted. If you plan on moving them I would make sure to do it while he is in a Toronto uniform, and before the last season of his contract if he has not yet signed an extension.

I'd sell 2 or 3 of them closer to the start of the playoffs when the hype is at an all time high. Leafs likely going to finish top of the division, so expectations should be high.

If the Leafs go deep into the playoffs you may miss out on some money, but at least you aren't taking the drop if they exit first round like usual.

Card prices always dip in the offseason so if Matthews is your investment, you likely could pick them up in the summer when no one cares about hockey at a discount for what you sold at.

I know some said long term hold, but I really think selling near the start of playoffs is the play OR if he goes on some big goal streak in the year again, then as long as Leafs don't win the Cup, I think you can grab them again in the offseason for less.

Long term there are too many risks, if he leaves Toronto, 100% his value is going down, injury, prices going down, performs like he is, prices maybe see a bump if the hobby keeps going up or stay as is. I think for his prices to really sky rocket Leafs need to make alot of noise in the playoffs. If he wins the rocket, sure his cards will bump up, but people right now are paying prices like he's won the rocket anyways.

Maple Leafs fan here.

If Matthews winds a Cup with Toronto (or even if they go on a crazy playoff run), his card prices (especially Graded) will soar to the moon.

Hold it.

I could be wrong, but I find card prices get a bigger rise when people "think" something is going to happen rather than it actually happening.

Seems like most will say "I have to invest in this card before he wins the Rocket Trophy" or if its trade rumours "I have to invest before this guy gets dealt"

selling now would prevent you from cashing in when Auston wins the Rocket.

prices aren't going down any time soon either, considering the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the top 3 teams favoured to win the Stanley Cup.

That's cause they only have to play crap teams to make the conference finals.

They are not even a Top 10 team.
The whole thing is a joke including any stats in the Canadian division.

Matthews will go down after the Leafs choke and he gets injured.

Matthews is likely going to win his first Rocket this year... then string consecutive Rockets over the next several years.

His cards are going to increase as he reels in the Rockets.

Don't be baited, K13 just goes thread by thread denouncing everyone and saying why they suck...

He's real big on McDavid too

This year is an aberration.

The North division shooters are feasting on continually playing against crap teams and crap goalies with the insulated schedule.

I’m not sure this year will be anything to extrapolate for years to come.

lol, it's going to be epic for K13 when McD and Matthews are both suited in the Blue and White together.

Matthews is never leaving Toronto... he's got his eye on being immortalized on Legends Row.

Somehow he never won one before for 4 years.
I wonder why...

They're a top 10 team but there's a good handful of teams any rational person would take ahead of them. Their blueline is improved over recent years but guys like Rielly and Brodie wont be as effective when the physicality rises in the playoffs. We've seen that every year.

And the one black hole on their team is the goalie. They wont win anything with Andersen in net.

lol, keep wondering... Matthews was within 4 goals of the Rocket in his Rookie season... this will be the first of many Rockets, you and Matthews will celebrate the Rocket together this year.

McDavid might, one day, win his first Rocket... when he goes home to Toronto and plays with Auston Matthews.

When I was like 15, 16 years old (2001-2003ish), I was on a different forum for Sports Cards. It may have just been called SportsCardForums.com or something like that. I can't remember what it was for the life of me. I tried to find it, but I'm pretty sure it's no longer in operation.

I am 95% sure I remember K13 from there.

So, at the very least, you have to respect the fact that he is memorable. As well as his commitment to the bit.

So a second year base card of him in a St Pat's jersey, PSA 10 just sold for 168 CAD with shipping?!?!

I would love to know who has 168 dollars to spend on a 25 cent card. This is just getting silly.

Only?

The dude is 23, lots of time to forge memories.

I am a life long Leafs fan, and he is the best player we have ever had. Again, he is only 23.

there's already 1,900 PSA 10s... eventually there will be 20,000 graded.

Auston Matthews is headed for Legends Row and he's bringing a bunch of records with him.
