Default DIY Seam Roll Repair and Press..Good idea?

I inherited a family members comic book collection recently. Most books are from the 80s and 90s, with several older books.

There aren't a ton of key books, but I do have most of Mcfarlane's ASM run, and many X-Men, Batman, Punisher etc.
ASM 300 has a brutal spine roll and most of the books need a good cleaning and press, before I send to CGC.

Have any of you guys had any success repairing a spine roll and pressing your own books?
If so, would you recommend a certain 15" x 15" press, or any other tools/materials needed for the task?
Is it even worth it to buy a press and do it all yourself?
Guessing 50 or more books are worth grading.

Just pay CGC to press them. It'll add 2-3 months to the process, but if you're in no hurry that might be a better option than buying a press and learning how to do it yourself

a picture is worth a 1000 words but maybe this will help without a press. I'd say a spine roll fix would bump the grade +0.5 or +1.0. +1.5 would be a stretch.

other things to consider before you start sending books to CGC:
  • will a press and dry clean even benefit the book? I've seen people submit books just to fix a non-color breaking fold because it's an eye sore, but the spine would have a bunch of color-breaking ticks. save your money if the overall defects outweigh the non-defects and sell them raw.
  • are these books even desirable? just because a book is slabbed doesn't mean it's on everyone's wishlist.
if you're planning to sell any books, I'd be interested.

Thanks for the info and tips... looks like I have some work ahead of me.

Here is one that could def use a press.
Noticed this is a McFarlane cover. I didn’t realize he worked on Batman.

yikes, that asm300 looks rough. since the venom 2 movie is coming out this summer, it *might* be worthwhile to submit to CGC. I'm grading it 3.0/3.5, assuming the front cover looks like the back. good luck!

yep, def not the best condition. Im trying to work out the seam roll with the weighted book technique now. I'll give it a few days, before I check on it.

The ASM 298, 299 and 301 are in much better condition.

Im having a blast going through all these boxes. I may end up with another hobby to go along with cards.
