Has anyone else slipped into buying unnecessary amounts of sub $20 cards recently.
I’m attributing it to the lack of ripping I think, or a bunch of collecting projects I started, or maybe it’s the new eNay shipping... either way I’m looking at my collection and going wow that’s a lot of low value stuff I added. Curious If anyone else has been buying low $ stuff. Is it for flipping, grading, or just schizophrenic collecting like me... Lefty Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My sweet spot for buying is usually in the $20-$50 range but definitely adding more cheap stuff like low end sapphire RCs and bum color in the $10 range since the standard envelope was launched.

This is my favorite playground too. Under the radar, not a big deal if they don't pan out, unlimited possibilities if they do.
I bought a 2017 Panini Prizm Patrick Mahomes Silver Prizm RC for $50 from my LCS a few years back. Graded it in a bulk sub for $10 and got lucky. In 2021, I now have a ~$10,000 asset. Rinse and repeat, right? Strange times

I keep trying to remind myself that 5x $20 cards cost the same as one $100 card, and take up 5x the room.
However, it always seems easier to hit the BIN or bid on something less than $20, and like you said, the new eBay shipping method has made it even easier. The struggle is real.

Other than a couple larger cards a month, that's virtually all I buy. I love it and love watching them rise in value.

As a buyer, I love it and hope more sellers use this vs charging $4 to ship a under $20 card. Great way to add cheap cards to fill out my collection. Although I will typically try to add cheap bulk rookie lots, this is good (as others have said) adding a cheaper parallels/autos of rookies and can add up in savings.
As a seller, it allows me to list a lot of under $20 cards and get them sold faster than I normally would. I also do medium flat rate boxes and this shipping method will take cards I used to put in there and try selling using this. Overall I love it and really hope it catches on. |

I am even finding myself buying doubles of low value cards now but why? Because $7 cards are actually $7 or $8 instead of $11 or $12.
I have started many insert sets over the years only to drop them because I don’t want to pay $3-$4 each for shipping. Now? The 52 Chrome set is going to be mine! All mine! I have not listed any sub-$20 cards yet, but I plan to do so. Why not? It’s so much easier now to get the actual value of the cards now instead of lowering the price to make a $15+$1 card a $12.50+$3.50 card. |

Sellers who have switched to ~$1 shipping with tracking have earned my business. $4.15 shipping on a $3 card, easy skip.

Those rags to riches stories aren't nearly as plentiful in baseball. That said I was VERY happy with the profits on Bieber last year and Flaherty the year before and Snell in 2018. Will this be the year for Glasnow or Burnes or Buehler or ?? to move into CYA territory? It's a fun way to play with cards. Even if their arms fall off we never approach the suicidal regret levels of high pedigree hitting busts because of low low buy in.

I have been in the $20-$50 range but not limited to Rookie Cards, been getting low serial number Red/Orange/Gold refractors of pc and non pc players I enjoyed/enjoy watching. So probably pissing money into the wind but I like shiny cards.

Not gonna give all of my "new to me" buying habits away but one thing I will say is I have realized that they don't always have to have a logo on their jersey for you to make some $. And a lot of these bigger cards fall in the <$20 range.

Interesting thread OP —- I just did this for the first time last month with wax ( my “thing“
)Bought several Leaf Draft and Elite Extra retail Baseball Blasters at $20 a pop. Usually I would not buy unlicensed product, but there’s so much upside when you only spend $20..... I’m pretty happy with these ‘not my normal price range’ boxes

Aside from buying an expensive, yet discounted, slab once in a while, what i do is search very hard...have patience....and finally, buy some great-looking raw cards between 20$-$50 and then get them graded.

I've been buying cards under $20 for a while now. Mostly Jordan, LeBron, Acuna, and modern Willie Mays and Ted Williams. I'm buying based on pictures I like, since these cards are all PC. I don't care what they're worth, just that I like them.
My collection is at the point that I am very happy with quality over quantity (even though I still have way too many cards). Now I'm just adding to all my different collections for very low prices and I find it to be a lot of fun.

Low value stuff can often turn into high value stuff. Look at base rookies of certain superstars you could have easily had for like $15 very early on in their careers in raw form and well, now you can't.
