Default 1996 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant - “Greening”

I guess greening was not an issue a while back or maybe never has been . I recall some members concerned what they might get for grades.

It is beyond my comprehension why PSA/BGS don't take this into consideration. I would rather have a semi-centered 8 that has its full color than that 10.

At least identify them as "green tint," like they did with 1962 Topps baseball.

The Black Label one they have up has a decent amount of greening too. Just wouldn't feel right having that.

Agreed. The Cert number on this looks like it might have been graded quite a while back ?

Big difference between the green and a nice clear picture.

Anyways thought I would share kind of interesting find as I was scrolling thru some listings.

The only card of Kobe that greens that I would still consider owning if I didn't already is the 1996 Finest Gold refractor.

Off the menu is:
1996 Topps chrome
1997 Finest gold embossed refractor
1997 Topps Chrome
1998 Topps Roundball Royalty Refractor
1996 Bowman's Best Refractors
I'm sure that I forgot a couple.

I'm curious if all of these will eventually green. There are some beautiful examples still with their original color, and it would be a shame if they deteriorated as well. I much rather have a PSA 8 with nice color than a greened PSA or even BGS 10, just as Packers said he would.

I have to add—at least that Kobe is fully greened. Chrome cards looks even worse during the actual greening process, like this '96 Finest Mantle Refractor

Was that possibly a reslab or do they not count greening as a defect?

Off centered and green as hell, yet still managed to get a PSA 10.

I dont think so because there would be evidence of it already. I think they starting using different technology in the 1998-1999 ones. If you can find a green 1998-99 chrome basketball card I stand corrected.

I feel like you don't see as many puke coloured finest cards from Kobe's rookie year. Are they printed using different technology or perhaps the peel stops if from happening? The 93 first year of finest are certainly greening and they had no peel.

Greening aside, with centering like that this card should be a PSA 9 at most. Also, this was definitely a reslab and not a recent grading.

ya that thing is noticeably off center. Must have been graded in '96 by a hungover grader. Obviously re-slabbed recently

The greening problem happens even after cards have been graded and encapsulated. The light and air exposure turns cards green, so the problem to almost all of these cards happen after they've been graded (especially if it's over 5+ years.) Check out my ebay listing of this card if you want to learn more. The grades on these cards in particular don't matter as much, the better selling cards have the least amount of greening typically.

The greening happens after the cards have been graded...95% of owners aren't properly storing this card. It's best to have no light exposure and the least amount of air exposure. More light exposure = more green

The one I have currently for sale is nicer than the black label.

The centering is not as bad as these appear. You should be looking from the tip of the basketball at the far right since it sticks out the most and then comparing that with the left line.

You seem very sure of yourself but that's not entirely accurate. Cards come straight from sealed boxes and packs discolored. I know this from personal experience as about 18 months ago I picked up a box of 97 Chrome and 75% of the cards were horrendously discolored, pack fresh. I'm sure leaving your chrome cards directly in sunlight won't help I'm sure 95% of collectors aren't this foolish.

Check out this thread and read all of what jyk913 posts. His theory is very sound about Topps discoloration...

https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1338572

But I see what you have done here

PS. I have opened multiple sealed boxes, from these Finest releases also - 93,94,96 and 97. And pretty much all have had varying degrees of discoloration straight from the pack.

Default 1996 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant - “Greening”

I’m not talking about sunlight, even regular house lights can create greening to these cards. I also believe how air-tight the case is effects it as well. The cards you’re pulling from packs are not air-tight. Also, if they were exposed to heat that could cause greening. I’m not sure I understand the crying reference.
