Default Rated Rookie (Donruss)

What does it mean for a rookie to be rated? If you're going to have an eyesore in your card design, shouldn't it at least make sense?

I remember the '88 Gregg Jeffries thank you very much

also have multiple Griffey '89s. Arguably the best-looking Griffey RC aside from the eyesore (amid an otherwise quite appealing design helping to make it arguably the best-looking Griffey RC).

If you remember 80s Donruss, then how do you make this thread? Did you just need to hear yourself speak again?

That’s only on days that end in Y.

No, the topic of what an nonsensical eyesore the "RATED ROOKIE" logo didn't come up in my mind until now, it wasn't discussed back in those sheltered days

Rated Rookie is a great piece of branding and a solid piece of graphic design that has stayed relevant for 38 years.

We need an efficiency rating to truly understand where the RR stands in relation to other products.

it f'ing fails the eye test along with other blazing bulging design elements (usually) that draw the f'ing attention all to themselves, and that includes the big chunky lowercase "D" logo Donruss uses for stuff as well.

Otherwise I tend to like some of their designs, e.g., the '89 Donruss. Their stock was too thin and prone to chipping, their puzzle inserts lame, that's my main issue there. '88 set is nice simple design and use of color, the '86 is cool (I have the Rookies set, Bo and Jose and Wally Joyner woohoo), the '87 is a little cheesy but understandable, the '90 sets onward are hard to remember & keep track of, I went to focus on basketball/MJ collecting after '91 or so.

i ask again, what does it mean for a rookie to be rated, and why does it have to be an eyesore

what about it makes it "a great piece of branding and a solid piece of graphic design that has stayed relevant for 38 years"?

I could see maybe some aspect of the solid-graphic-design part, but DonRuss is kind of hit-or-miss remember and public tastes don't guarantee fine quality (see macro swill vs. micro beer you can taste

and then no one can explain what a rated rookie is?

Think of it as “Highly Rated Rookie.” It was Donruss’s answer to Topps’ Future Stars. Back in the day, not every player got a Rated Rookie card, so it meant something. Now it’s just a logo used for nostalgia purposes.

Actually collecting cards might help explain it.

"Donruss asked Bill Madden to declare which players had the most potential and deserved being “Rated” in the 1984 Donruss set."

Why didn't he make Mattingly "rated"? No idea.

I assume either Bill Madden or someone else did that for future Donruss sets in the 80's. The logo from 1985 on also caught your eye when opening packs and I always would set aside those cards.

i think issue is now every rookie (atleast from football donruss and optic) are all Rated Rookies, while in the past only the top rookies (however that was determined) had the tag. i think that changed last year or year before

so rated means highly rated (and stating it in eyesore/bigfont form ain't exactly beautiful,

and most valuable means most valuable to a valuable team or something like that

it's all coming together, a pattern emerging

as for the aesthetics of the RATED ROOKIE logo, i say it speaks for itself but apparently there's nostalgia for '80s/retro camp that exceeds good taste, or now we are to learn that aesthetics = branding success

strain this time is, uh, giving me short-term memory issues, here, just a sec,,, Danny Deweedo! (cross of Secret Cookies and Kush Mints, smells/tastes great, etc.

That would explain the lack of funds for cards.
