Happy New Year! Firing up the Snakes thread (my National League team) with only 41 days until Spring Training. The 2024 season was incredibly disappointing as the Diamondbacks scored the most runs in baseball, but collapsed in the final week of the season in agonizing fashion to miss the playoffs. Things I'm excited for...
1) Starting Pitching – Corbin Burnes!!! A signing so shocking that Jaypers didn't even start a thread for it. While the offense rolled, the pitching staff underperformed ranking 27th in the MLB in ERA (4.62, starters and relievers combined). I'm hoping for Jordan Montgomery to have a bounceback year and with Kelly, Gallen, Pfaadt, Nelson and others, this should be one of the best starting rotations in baseball. 2) Corbin Carroll – The Diamondbacks brightest hobby darling had a "down" sophomore campaign (still posting a 3.4 WAR). After a slow start, Corbin had a great season before fading again in September. I'm hoping for a more consistent season and a return to 2023 ROTY form. Things I wonder about... 3) The Bullpen – AJ Puk was a great add, while Dylan Floro was abysmal after joining the team and Paul Sewald got the yips. Ginkel and others pitched well, but going deep into the bullpen meant ballooning ERAs. Definitely need to see improved pitching from the backend of the bullpen. The Dbacks also fired pitching coach Brent Strom and other members of the pitching coaching staff so I'll be watching closely to see how the new coaches fare. Thanks Hollywood for the inspiration from the 2025 Twins thread (my American League team) and I'm hoping dbacksfan4life emerges after starting previous year's threads. Past Diamondbacks season threads I could locate: 2018 2017 2016 2013 |

I'm ready to re-emerge for this one
![]() Agree with all the points above. FanGraphs currently has us projected to have the #10 rotation by WAR - hell, even getting to 15 would be a major improvement from last year's pitching debacle and probably guarantee a wild card spot (assuming hitting remains same or better). The bullpen remains questionable, as always. Been watching this team since 1999, not sure the bullpen has ever actually been good. Hoping for another signing before spring training to round out the bullpen, otherwise just going to have to hope to catch lighting in a bottle. If Justin Martinez can continue to develop, I'd feel a lot better. Outside of a more consistent season from Corbin, I'd like to see one of the outfielders string it all together for a full season. I love them, but think this is about the last chance for Alek or Jake to put together a full solid season.

I'm going to miss Zac Gallen if he leaves after this season, and I'm looking forward to a continued rebound from Carroll. The NL might be tough this year though.

Would love to see Lawlar make the opening day roster but doesn't seem likely. Probably would benefit from a half season of reps down
He's one of my PC guys and I think he's going to be so damn good eventually. |

Dodgers fan here. Looking forward to the 2025 season. The National League West is going to be tough.

And now there's two Corbins on the team.
I'm so used to referencing Carroll as Corbin it's going to take some adjustment! |

I'm a mid-west AL team fan and as someone with no allegiance to the Diamondbacks I really like their team (sans bullpen). So much so that I put some money on a few different World Series matchups this week all featuring the D-backs because I thought the odds we extremely favorable.
Figured they may make a move by trade deadline to bolster that 'pen. |

With the speed that Corbin, Alek and Jake share, I would also love to see all three have a "contract year." So much fun to watch those Dbacks run the bases.Quote:

Have been wondering - what happened to Carroll in the first half of the season?
Lingering minor injury that could be played through, but Or, just the oppo data mining attacking a “hole in his swing” as they say Or, maybe a little known off-field/family issue (these are rarely known by the public - which is as it should be - but sometimes the local press knows what’s up) |

Or random variance^^^
One thought I had. If Pete Alonso ends up on a one year deal, the D'backs need to be the team to get him.

There was a pretty good article I read a few months back on his struggles and it seemed to be a number of things (intense pressure after so much quick success, certainly a bit of a nagging injury) but my takeaway was some holes in his swing that he couldn't adjust to.
If I recall correctly (wish I could find this article), he wasn't having a lot of luck with fixing things until Joc Pederson offered to let him take advantage of his personal hitting coach. I believe it was right around the ASB, and this coincides with things turning around for Corbin. I remember Corbin being very diplomatic and saying sometimes you just need to hear things from an outsider, but it did concern me about the D-backs coaching staff a bit...but hoping he has the right tools, both mental and physical, now to keep adjusting.

Really strong post here. He’s really intriguing to me as his potential is still so tantalizing. At his worst he’s a much better version of a Johnny Damon, and his ceiling it still could be Uber elite.

Yeah, the Diamondbacks might be pretty good this year.
Great start so far.

Yeah the offense is great but pretty much the whole pitching staff should be thrown out
