Default What cards were displaying trade value at National?

Haven't really heard a definitive trip report. Watched a few Geoff videos, but of course half of the point is to hype the piece discussed.

Question is, which players issues have jumped in perceived value when trade comes to shove on the Chicago floor?

Who are people lining up bets on prior to what looks to be an entertaining upcoming season with lots of new star faces and probably heightened importance placed on the IST as a grudge settler?

Super interesting conversation between Geoff and CardCollector2 at the 2025 National.

Main points:

Shiny modern was largely in the expanded upper floor, which was cramped. They wonder why space was not offered up there to soccer, which decamped to its own show 10 miles away.

Sales are through the roof. The hobby has never been in a better place. I think a lot of this is shaded toward vintage though. As a primarily ultra modern collector/investor (Nesmith and whoever comes next) I don't think there has been much upward. I guess MJ everything went gangbusters and even Rodman got some love.

Apparently, football at Cards HQ is selling off the shelves. Baseball is meh. And basketball just sits on the shelves, completely unsold. I wonder if part of this has to do with having no dynamic stock of key players popular with kids on emerging teams like the Thunder and Pacers?

I often watch Geoff and think he has no knowledge of basketball and Teapot is only slightly better. I guarantee you they didn't spend their $500k, reupped to $1 million, on the kind of "fly out door" ultra modern cards that should be featured. Specifically, the players currently achieving great things in Finals.

So you are are saying sky is the limit.

Interest was flagging, now I am dubbing down.

I think that some shows have more hip basketball centric crowds as well.

I mean at Fanatics Fest, may refuse to buy him, but everyone knew Kneesmiff.

Who did you see buzz on about? I barely hear the word Wembanyama on podcasts. Packman hits his Imacc jerseys and it's noted with less enthusiasm than Zion. Honestly.

I sell at shows in Philly area and basketball just isn’t as hot here at all … I’m convinced it’s more of a west coast thing in terms of basketball selling well at shows. Or online obviously.

I think the answer is current basketball and new young crop aren't as exciting or popular. I think 90s-00s stars and HOF cards are still very active.

The NFL season is about the start so it should be gearing up.

Dang. I really picked the worst time to get into the hobby.

Thank god Indiana is basically basketball territory. There will always be a regional market to support likable Pacers and the '25 legend will only grow in the telling and rewatching.

If they don't pull a dynasty on us.

Was able to find and purchase some scarce Luka RCs but several individuals and dealers told me that they were holding on to most of what they had.

Shoulda mortgaged the bahay on Eala rookiez. She's got the juice and more recognized internationally than 5000 kneesmiff clones combined.

Royalty autos disappearing quicker than falsely accused fent dealers under the Duterte regime.

I mean that was just power consolidation under a new triad-cartel configuration. But it felt very invasive at the time.

I agree. It's like take the bait or hear the crickets chirp. At least I have the excuse of being a fiction writer.

Also, give me credit for laying out salient boring points and having no one comment. Fraud cases, the next hype prospect, and (to be fair) ninja are the gas that keeps the forum going.

Fair point. I mean one man's PMG condition and suspected wear issues is another's man's tofurkey. All are in the kind of 'soy beans imitating meat' trap, if you ask me.

But yeah, life under Duterte was like a heart attack at first. Lots of civil rights impinged on and broken. Was it worth it? After all, drugs were destroying whole families and the first rule is no high on own supply....

Anyway, many would argue that all that was nothing compared with what devices, social media, proto-current election strategies, and unregulated gambling did.

And still the country has a democracy, some nature, beautiful smiles, happiness without much money, and freedom to vote for whoever you like. Some of the most passionate and dedicated collectors in the world.

Duterte is even coming under scrutiny in The Hague and that's serious, because they are looking at the whole system and infrastructure. Will it affect some high end collectors? Probably already has, but the passion for basketball runs deep and whoever has money to afford it will continue the alternative investment tradition. Anyway, who wants vaults of Trae?*

*TBH I am a cautious value buyer, some respected pundits are bullish on the Hawks chances.

We're in the doldrums of the year for basketball right now. No draft, no more summer league, no NBA season for two more months. Best time to buy guys you like.

A few hot takes, not from the National floor, but a breaker.

Quentin Post = QPeezy

De'Aaron 'Derrrn' Fox "fresh off that new money"

"there's like a legit debate if Kyrie Irving is better than Chris Paul"

"there's Lebron (tomahawk chop)... I can't believe they did my man dirty like that, put the NFL shield on the back of his scalp... they could have colored that in."

"Afro samurai Jarrett Allen on the red wave"

"AJ Johnson Private Signings. We get three of these a case."

"Duncan Robinson, welcome to Detroit... and Beef Stew. Got Beef Stew to protect him. Set those picks. Replace Malik Beasley with Duncan Robinson. I say yes."

"Again, AJ Johnson Private Signings. He's good value now. Fonna get a real shot over in Washington."

"Philly trash, we gotta start flipping people. Get Maxey up out of there. Hand the reins over to Jared and BJ. If we're blowing it up, he's the only value we have."

"Los Angeles Lakers legend Marcus Smart..."

Not sure why Siakam gets a grunt of disgust and Haliburton a highly derisive "mojo" (on a base). Cavs, Knicks, or Bucks fan?

"Furph Dog! Thought he had a summer."

"Followed by... I told you.. number 3. AJ Johnson Private Signings."

"Matas Buzelis. Nice Boozy vert."

"Kel'el might actually be a dawg this season. If Spose let him shoot it."

"Hill Billy Mamba, Austin Reeves, to 99 on the Big Purp."

"Scottie Pippen doesn't smell like his dad (?)"

"NBA Finals legend TJ McConnell on the mojo auto. 'Cer. New Pacers starting point guard until Haliburton gets his situation squared away. 'Cer."

Ok I am gonna shut this down for a moment. Everyone knows Nembhard is the starting point guard.

We interrupt this programming for Skinny Luka Doncic! Slovenia VS Germany.

TBC...

To round out what I learned:

DK Netsplash = Dalton Knecht

"Steve Francis could hoop but he wouldn't play for Vancouver because he didn't want to play overseas. Not the brightest."
"Who would he be today? Like Ja?"
"Ah nah. He was a little more aggressive getting buckets than Ja is."

"Whaddya know. Private Signings. AJ Johnson, the fourth of the break."

All in all, the break reminded me of the late Blez Prizm hobby breaks in that there was no good color, a few mojos. They must have really stretched out the Prizm print run well beyond expected.

I'm on the fence on that. I mean the fact he didn't realize McConnell will never start and Nembhard is the point guard was worrying.

But his take on Ja was spot on.
