Your war position and war opponent are random. The only war preordained is Matt Strahm vs Phil Hughes.

WAR RULES:
1. Lowest right side serial number wins.
2. If right side is a tie, lowest left side serial number wins.
3. In the event of a tie, players trade cards.

(If Matt Strahm pulls a 4/5 & Phil Hughes pulls a 01/10, Matt Strahm wins. If Matt Strahm pulls a 4/5 & Phil Hughes pulls a 2/5, Phil Hughes wins. If Matt Strahm pulls a 4/5 & Phil Hughes pulls a 4/5, they switch cards and both win.)

After the random, 1vs2, 3vs4, etc.

Yes that's correct.

I don't understand the right side vs left side? I figured each card only had one #/# but I guess not?

if both cards are #/10, then whoever has the lower #/10 wins (left side/right side)
