Default Justin Herbert: Am I too late?

Hi, guys, I want to ask a simple question, and then I'll offer up an explanation. Am I too late to affordably collect Justin Herbert (rookies especially but not exclusively)? I don't necessarily mean this from an investment perspective in that I'm looking to flip him later on. I am a 100% scar tissue Chargers fan since 1981. Yeah, I'm that old suddenly.

I am not an auto guy, and I really don't care whether or not all of the cards are graded. I'm not anti, I can go graded or ungraded. 95% of my collection is vintage baseball, but I have always been a Chargers fan. I just haven't collected their cards much. Herbert and this crew gives me some hope for the first time in a long time.

I am also thinking about picking up cards of Keenan, Mike, Eck, Joey, and the rest of the crew...not necessarily rookies only. These guys will be easy enough I figure. I just wasn't sure about Herbert. Thanks in advance.

And please don't barrage me with a ton of stuff for sale. I'm still in the "thinking about it" phase.

No there are a ton of low end rookie singles for Herbert if you are looking to build a collection and don’t care about investments.

If you want shiny and cool looking go Select or Mosaic. Then the usual absolute, donruss, chronicles, etc. will be the more traditional style.

He hasn’t won a playoff game yet and you ask if you’re too late?! Ha ha j/k I’m a big Herbert investor now’s a great time to scoop up some Herbert! For PC buy raw but if you plan to flip in 10+ years buy graded PSA cards.

Plenty of cheaper cards especially if your not a big auto guy. Herbert is expensive but there is plenty of room for growth on his lower end stuff.

I would suggest staying with rookies for the most part as they will maintain value a lot longer than other cards if you do ever want to sell and try and recoup some
Money.

I would say you are fine. Once the better football stuff started to come out his rookie year/after the 2020 season he was already pretty expensive, so everyone bought in at high prices.

See what burrow cards did during the playoffs? As high as Herbert is now, if he can win a super bowl in the next few years his prices can still double and reach mahomes level, and the ceiling is Brady level, so you will be fine.

Nobody will be at Brady’s level in our lifetime.

Especially not any of these guys. As everybody keeps posting - the AFC is stacked. As no one has noticed, that's not a good thing for any of these guys. Only 1 of them gets to go to the Super Bowl every year and, even then, they've got to hope that the top NFC team isn't just flat out better - making it even worse for them all. Reality. Just sayin'.

At these prices, I'd honestly rather invest in Burrow.

And that's not something I would have said last season.

If you think he's getting to the Super Bowl then there's room to grow. Otherwise, his cards might gradually settle into the Derek Carr realm.

Already been mentioned but Josh Allen. You have to figure at some point he will get past Mahomes in the playoffs and his cards will go nuts. He could also legit win mvp next year.

Lamar jackson A more high risk high reward play. People are way down on him, so there is more value when buying his cards.

heck even trevor lawrence. Going to have a ton of hype going into next year. Pretty much a sure bet his low end cards will jump 50% by the time the preseason starts. Not happening with herbert.

I think it's safe to say the LamJack ship has sailed.

It may have. No doubt. But He is only 25. He won a wildcard game in the playoffs in 2020. Unanimous mvp 2019. Health is an issue, but he has had moments.

Look what happened with Darnold cards after the panthers went 3-0. I'm sure people gave up on him way before that panthers trade. Just that trade boosted his cards.

I'm more of a swing trader, so not sure that is what OP is looking for. But just some perspective. The safest play is probably a QB from the 2021 class.

I dont understand the Josh Allen stuff. Herbert is light years better than Allen was his first two seasons, plus Allen is two years older than Herbert.

I would also argue the Chargers have a better team than the Bills going into this season.

It's not just his health. His overall play has regressed. His mechanics. His decision making.

As you saw from this past season, he needs a very strong and viable run game (more so than a lot of QBs) in order to flourish.

Defenses are not scared of Lamar throwing the ball.

I wouldn't. The chargers as a franchise have shown that they can't get it done. while it is not Herberts fault really, his hobby ceiling is only so high if they don't make the playoffs. The Bills are a lot closer of a team to winning big games.

People will say Chargers gonna charger, but personally I got the same view on this topic as you.

And to those saying the Bills get it done, how many SBs again did they win?

Exactly the reason I think they will get it done in the next few years. Law of averages.

There’s still time to collect Josh Rosen.

I personally love Herbert and his potential. His RC autos are not extremely expensive but I would find the one brand that you would enjoy collecting and buying at least 1 RC Auto because I believe in the talent.

Like so many others have said his rookies and inserts that are aren't rookies are reasonable. I also believe that Herbert will have more coverage through the coming years because he will be playing against Mahomes who is this generations Dan Marino but better.
