Anyone that did it before Chocolate Thunder did it by mistake or it was a defective backboard.

The Rifleman

Quote:
In honor of the Celtics' 75th anniversary, a look back at the most memorable moments in team history. In 1946, center Chuck Connors broke the backboard in the team's first ever home game, causing an hour-long delay.
Quote:
The classic story is well-known to everyone who has been around the Celtics for a few years. “On opening night (against the Chicago Stags) at the Boston Arena,” said Powers, “Chuck Connors smashed the backboard with his last warm-up shot.”

“That wasn’t too bad because we had a spare at the Garden,” said McHugh. “Except the rodeo was in town. Where do you think the spare glass-backboard was stored? Right behind the pen for the Brahma bulls, and we couldn’t get anyone brave enough to go in and get it. We looked around for some drunken cowboys, but no luck.”

“We finally got the glass, and the game was held up for only an hour,” said Powers to complete the story.

Yes, Dawkins was the backboard breaker known as Chocolate Thunder.

Darrell Griffith was a high flying guard known as Dr Dunkenstein.

For the Ole' schools who have been around , one of the 1st to break a basket dunking was Gus Johnson for the Baltimore Bullets. Fantastic team with Earl Monroe & Wes Unseld.....

Only drawback to this game, was you could only break the backboard once!

* Note: I might have the wrong date and wrong person associated with this fact.
