Ever buy a card you want, just for a card you NEED to pop up

I bought a card I liked and wanted for a card I NEED to pop up literally the same day. Anyone else have this happen?! I ended up buying both

Love 2013 Five Star - never had that happen but I’ve bought cards I like due to what’s available and then sell it for ones I like even more of that player.

Curious if there's a reason you NEEDED the card (ie set completion, etc) or is NEED just arbitrary?

I've definitely bought cards I've wanted before and have had others pop-up shortly after that were needed to complete a specific set or rainbow, but cards I NEED aren't subjective to financial limitations.... within reason of course.

Happens all the time where I spend a decent amount on some cool stuff, even things that are high up on my want lists. Only for additional and/or even higher up want list cards to pop up shortly thereafter, but no longer any space in the hobby budget to make a play at them. Sometimes I can make it work, sometimes I have to grit my teeth and pass. Such is life

I’ve had sort of the opposite happen.

I was the black atomic away from completing the Bo Bichette 2020 Bowman Sterling rainbow. After not seeing a black atomic pop up for two years, I gave up and sold the incomplete rainbow to a big Bichette collector.

Almost immediately a black atomic popped up. It was priced way too high (had an extra zero on it), so I probably wasn’t going to be completing the rainbow anyway, but I felt like the universe was trolling me.

Unfortunately, funds available has severely limited my ability to say buy both. I used to without question but now even for a "need" for my #1 PC guy which is undoubtedly rare occurrence at this point, I still hesitate due to money. I bought a 1/1 for $500 and then literally the next night a better 1/1 showed up for 1k last year and I just withheld my clicking finger. Didn't help it was the middle of the night and I thought it was different card based on the pic (foggy brain stuff lol) but it was the money amount that made me not buy the need.

Can't have them all no matter how hard we try. If you can buy both without thinking, then enjoy. Good times for you.

I have wanted a copy of the 2013 Topps Museum Ken Griffey Jr autograph /20 since release. Being in Canada, sellers of the few copies that showed up for sale were unwilling to ship to me. This year, just before the National, one showed up on COMC and I landed it for just over $300 and a few days later, another copy showed up on eBay and sold for just over $500. I would have had my pick thanks to other avenues to get cards to Canada.

There are only a few types of cards that anyone "needs". Green card might be one of those. ID card if you are trying to buy weed or alcohol legally...
