Default It’s time to talk about an embarrassing company’s embarrassing website: eTopps

I suppose I’ll post this here since baseball is the only sport Topps is still relevant in.
As most of you certainly know, early this century Topps launched etopps.com. It was like #TOPPSNOW, COMC and UD e-pack combined into one awesome platform. For a couple years, they managed it competently and the site flourished. This did not last long, and by 10 years later, they were screwing up on a daily basis and the site was left to die in December of 2011.

The website now is straight up embarrassing. This is what they did to the card images — they don’t want anybody becoming interested and discovering what a wonderful thing they destroyed:

But they also jacked up the price of shipping, ensuring that most of the cards costed more to ship than they were worth, essentially holding our cards hostage. You have 2000 cards? That’ll be $4,000 for shipping, sir.

If you dared complain about this to them, their response was always “sell them on ebay” which was an option the site had always offered. Like COMC, no shipping had to be done by the seller. But nobody was bidding on these auctions. Because of the high eventual shipping rate and because nobody knew what they were, especially because Topps didn’t provide ebay with any images.

But the weirdest thing happened early in 2018 - values started to rebound. People were discovering these awesome cards that were sold on an ahead-of-its -time website! That is, until the ability to list on ebay stopped working 4 months ago.
That’s why this constantly growing line suddenly stops:

Now when you dare complain to them, their response to literally any question you ask is “clear your browser’s cache” - yes, I’m sure that no auctions have been listed onto ebay in 4 months because every single one of your users’ cache is messed up. Uh huh. Right.

So, either pay more than your cards are worth to have them delivered, or leave them on the website where you can do absolutely nothing with them.

Go check it out for yourself. https://www.etopps.com is the link, which they don't even want you finding on google - they have a "robots.txt" file designed to prevent search engines.

Jamal Lewis was absolutely responsible for the first Etopps fiasco.

Kevin? Are you out here? You'll back this up.

I can't even remember my password now to my account there. So is it a waiting game right now between eTopps and folks that have cards still in their port? Pay the ridiculous charges to ship the cards in hand...or at some point Topps might finally get tired of paying for the space to store these cards in wherever the warehouse is and do a special where it's actually reasonable to ship all cards in hand to their owners?

The Mike Trout Etopps rookie card has blown up in value and some say this may be the Trout rookie to have.

I loved the Etopps platform and they are beautiful cards in hand.

<----------- One of my favorites is the Andrew McCutchen

My email associated with my eTopps account no longer exists apparently...same email I use for all things sports related.

I still have the T206 set they did... Have it in hand though so no worries getting it shipped.

they will probably make a public statement saying something to the effect of

epack will be gone in 30 days. you have until then to have your cards shipped, after that time, all remaining cards will be destroyed.

would not surprise me if they go that route.

Yeah I had a lot of bidding on those, nostalgia kicked in. I picked up probably 20 or so. The best I saw was a 2001 Chipper Jones still in port. Which I did not end up winning because its still a $100+ card. I noticed others also started bidding with more as time went on this year. Though in the past several months after seeing listings being put up on eBay this year, they have dried up again. edit: I didn't realize topps stopped listings.

I wonder if I was smart enough to buy at least one of those 2011 Trouts or some older Bradys.

Aside from the potential flag code issue, that really isn't any worse than the site looks today

Finally went and checked to see the specifics of the pack...

A couple weeks before their message board shut down, I bought another guy's account from him... the pack of cards in there is also 2007 A&G. Wonder if it's still worth the $2.99 price they show as the value.

well, spend the money on shipping with a credit card, get cards in hand and then put a claim in to your credit card company saying they charged you too much for shipping
