Default Official 2024-25 NBA Season Thread

A few news stories have already happened for the new season, so I figured it was time to have an official thread.

Here's to a healthy and entertaining 2024-25 NBA season.

Just saw the Cavs hired Kenny Atkinson. I think it's a great hire. He did a really nice job in Brooklyn and was pretty shocked he hadn't gotten a head coaching gig since then.

Cavs have one of the most interesting/potentially transformative (for better or worse) offseasons in the NBA coming up.

A few major decisions to be made now

Hiring Atkinson seems like a good move for Cleveland

I think Atkinson is an upgrade over JB but he’s still pretty meh. I’m not sure with how the roster is currently constructed how you’re going to make an offense out of this.

I really don’t think Mobley and Allen can share the floor. You could probably make Mitchell & Garland work with a lot of off ball movement but you need one of your bigs to shoot for that to work.

I figured Allen would be traded but maybe not with the Atkinson hiring

Quote:
[Wojnarowski] The Cavaliers are especially eager for Atkinson's player development program to impact young 7-footer Evan Mobley, sources said. Atkinson has a strong history with Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert from their time together with the Nets.

At the end of the day I thought it was egregious that Mobley and Allen were 4th and 5th on the team in shot attempts per game.

Everything I've heard this offseason points to the failure of a plan to get Mobley involved more in the offense year 3 was a big part of why they got rid of JB. He managed LESS shots per game this year (down to 11.0 from 12.0) despite improvements in every offensive category:

Would trading Mitchell and Allen mean missing the playoffs? Because that could mean 2-3 lottery picks in the next few years with a better developed Mobley.

Seems like a one step back, two steps forward move.

I’m sure someone is gonna complain about too many Cavs posts but I’m not sure what return you could realistically get for those guys that would be worth it.

You figure you can probably get 3+ 1sts and a player for Mitchell and maybe a 1st and a player for Allen?

I’m fine if you want to develop Mobley but then you’re also going to need to get lucky via the draft and hope that in 3 years you’ve got a playoff team

Woj Bomb: Mikal Bridges going to the Knicks for 4 (!!!) unprotected 1st plus a pick swap and a conditional pick. Bogdanovic being traded to match salaries.

Also, Houston working on a deal to have 3 of the next 5 Suns 1st rounders. Rumors are they are going after KD/Booker.

Because he’s slow, can’t shoot, and can’t defend outside of 3ft.

It’s easy to score a bunch of points when you’re 7’4 playing against a bunch of dudes who are 6’9.

He’s going to get played off the floor so fast. Totally unplayable in any important game. He got absolutely torched by UConn guards in the championship

My draft big board finalized (I think):

1. Z Risacher
2. S Castle
3. M Buzelis
4. C Williams
5. D Clingan
6. R Sheppard
7. T Salaun
8. A Sarr
9. D Carter
10. D Knecht

something big brewing for Houston?

Quote:
[Windhorst] If the Rockets take Donovan Clingan... another center... that would potentially enable them to make Alperen Sengun...available in a type of trade today going in front of the Suns, the Rockets are full go to improve dramatically now…and that’s why they did this trade now
Quote:
[Scotto] Houston is continuing to seek upgrades to help the team improve now, and Rockets coach Ime Udoka remains a fan of his former Celtics player, Marcus Smart, on the Grizzlies, league sources told HoopsHype.
Is the end goal FVV-Smart-KD-Jabari Smith-Clingan ?? Interesting squad if so.

Sengun going the way of Sabonis if true...both are Jokic light, both potentially booted from their drafted team too early (although Sabonis was playing pf, since Turner was the C)

Shepard is probably the best, but 6'2.

Yeah I'm well aware Sarr is going top 3, kudos to whatever coaching staff wants to take on that project, it will be interesting. There is a nonzero chance he becomes a minor star, and the only guy I'd absolutely avoid out of the top lottery names is probably Holland.

I think they'll start Amen instead of Clingan and play Jabari at 5?

Anyway, that squad with Whitmore, Eason and Clingan on the bench can be dangerous. Or win 40 games, I have no idea.

Nonzero chance he becomes a minor star is a mind bender

what do you like about him aside from measurements? He's extremely raw, looks lost quite often in PnR. Has makings of an outside shot but it needs a lot of work to be useful in NBA.

He's somewhere on the spectrum between a Mobley and Willie Cauley-Stein but much closer to WCS methinks.

It's all going to depend on how hard he works as a pro, which is hard to predict.
